(LE MARS)–Power is out in a small area of northwest Le Mars.
MidAmerican Energy crews are working on the outage. As of 6 a-m, about 700 customers in Le Mars, 66 customers in Oyens and about 300 in rural Plymouth County were without power. The number was reduced to about 150 by 7:30 a.m. As of 8 am, less than 50 customers were without power.
Heavy rain fell during a thunderstorm about four this morning. KLEM recorded 2.3 inches of rain by 6 a.m.
The National Weather Service had issued a Flash Flood Warning until 7:30 this morning for Woodbury, Dakota, Ida and Buena Vista Counties. The warning for northern Plymouth and southern Sioux Counties ended at 6 p.m. Some roads may still be impassible due to the heavy rains overnight.

(LE MARS)–Floyd Valley Hospital is enhancing it services for the early detection of breast cancer. .

(LE MARS)—The City of Le Mars will receive federal funds to
take off snow at the Le Mars Airport.
Senator Tom Harkin announced more than 110-thousand dollars for the city of Le Mars airport. The funds are from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to improve airports.
Harkin’s office reports the Le Mars airport funds are for snow removal equipment.
Fair Cooking School is egg-themed
(LE MARS)–The cooking school at the Plymouth County Fair will be egg-citing this evening.
That’s the plan Jennifer Loudermilk has for the Iowa Egg Council cooking school in air-conditioned Century Hall.
Loudermilk prepares everything from omelets to a cream puff swan.
The Royal resident will create some of her favorite recipes with egg ingredients.
The Fair cooking school begins at seven this evening.
Rainfall on Day 2 of 2010 Fair
(LE MARS)–Attendance for the second day of the 2010 Plymouth County Fair was estimated at 13,600.
A popular grandstand attraction tonight is the Tractor Pull. Following the cooking school, the Country Western Dance begins at 9 in Century Hall.
4-H judging today includes the Dog Show, Breeding Beef and Market Beef Show, 4-H Working Exhibits and the Dairy Goat Show.

Iowa adopts Common Core State Standards
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The Iowa Board of Education has voted 6-0 to adopt the Common Core State Standards, a nationwide initiative to keep students nationally and internationally competitive.
The initiative is a voluntary effort led by states to develop common expectations among them for what students should learn from kindergarten through high school. The standards cover language arts and math. They seek to set clear and realistic goals for success.
The board on Thursday approved the Common Core standards as part of the Iowa Core, which was enacted in 2008 and specifies skills and concepts that Iowa K-12 students must learn.
All Iowa school districts and accredited nonpublic schools are required to implement the Iowa Core by 2014-2015.
Minn.’s Pawlenty gazes south at Iowa as 2012 looms
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Republican Tim Pawlenty shares something important with the Iowans he’s working to impress: A border.
The two-term Minnesota governor makes his latest step across state lines this weekend to campaign for Iowa Republicans. It’s viewed as part of Pawlenty’s exploration of a 2012 presidential run.
Geographic proximity is no guarantee of success. But it can be an asset for a candidate who shares a cultural sensibility with the neighboring state and can get there easily to be seen.
This will be Pawlenty’s third Iowa trip and he has two more planned, one in August and another in October.
Iowa voters have delivered caucus wins to past neighbors Barack Obama and Walter Mondale, but also dealt crippling losses to border-state politicians.
Technology fails speeder crackdown in Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Technology failed as police attempted to maintain their stepped up enforcement of speed laws on the major highways through Cedar Rapids on Thursday morning.
The batteries died on a laser speed gun an officer was operating from the Glass Road overpass, stalling the crackdown.
Capt. Steve O’Konek says officers have been using laser speed guns in recent weeks to catch speeders on Interstate 380 and Highways 30 and 100. He says the newer laser guns are better equipped to pick speeding cars out of groups of vehicles.
Regular patrols, unmarked cars and laser and radar guns are being used, along with newly installed speed cameras.
Capt. Tom Jonker says enforcement ebbs and flows depending on the resources available and the number of complaints about speeders.
Iowa AG seeks to stop 3 charities
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Attorney General Tom Miller says he’s working to stop three fundraising operations from soliciting donations in Iowa and wants the Legislature to change the law to make it easier to learn how charities spend their money.
Miller say one fundraiser, Bloomington, Ind.-based Campaign Center, has agreed to stop soliciting in Iowa. It wasn’t registered with the state as required.
Miller says he’s asked a judge to stop Milwaukee-based Community Support, Inc., from telephone solicitations in the state. And he says a third company, Public Safety Communications of Des Moines, is under court order to stop operating.
He urged lawmakers on Thursday to approve a measure requiring charitable groups to disclose their income and state how much of donations go for administration and fundraising.
Texas man convicted in Iowa of alien smuggling
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) A Texas man has been convicted of transporting illegal aliens to Iowa, resulting in the death of one of them.
U.S. Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt said Thursday that 35-year-old Javier Garcia Alvarez, of Dallas, was convicted by a jury in federal court in Des Moines on Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Garcia, himself an illegal alien, was transporting 10 illegal aliens in a van from Arizona to Iowa. The van was struck broadside when it ran a stop sign in rural Marshall County of central Iowa the night of Feb. 26. The crash killed Noemi Celestino De Jesus, whose husband testified in the trial.
U.S. District Judge John Jarvey will set a sentencing date later. Prosecutors say Garcia faces up to life in prison.
