(LE MARS)–Ice Cream is a fund raiser for a group of Le Mars volunteers this afternoon.
Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars Auxiliary hosts their Ice Cream Social Summer fund raiser from 2:30-4 this afternoon in the dining room. All proceeds from the Ice Cream Social at Good Samaritan will be used for resident services and programs.
Other fund raisers include the Soup, Sandwich and Pie Supper in the fall and the Sunday Brunch in the Spring.
Volunteers give many hours assisting in resident programs and other projects. Anyone interested in being an auxiliary member and volunteering may contact Good Samaritan. The Le Mars location is on Highway Three East.
Akron-Westfield students present at Encounter Center August 28
(SIOUX CITY)-Students from a Plymouth County school will make a presentation in Sioux City on the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U-S Constitution.
The League of Woman Voters of Sioux City and the Betty Strong Encounter Center are marking the anniversary of women’s right to vote legislation. The program Sunday, August 28th at 2 p.m is at the Encounter Center on Sioux City’s riverfront.
Presenters include the eighth grade students from Akron-Westfield. The group created a 2009 History Day Research Project and D-V-D on the life of Iowan Carrie Chapman Catt. Catt led the final march to passage of the amendment in 1920 as President of the National American Woman’s Suffrage Association. The Iowa State University graduate founded the League of Woman Voters that same year.
The mother of U-S Senator Charles Grassley was the fifth woman to vote in Iowa in Grundy County when the first Iowa women legally cast votes in the election in August of 1920.
NCC names Morgan Alumnus of the Year
(SHELDON)–A Sheldon and Spirit Lake business owner is the 2010 Alumnus of the Year for Northwest Iowa Community College.
Rich Morgan of Sheldon received his Auto Body degree from what Northwest Iowa Community College was first called, Northwest Iowa Vocational School.
He took the skills from that degree in 1975 to a job at Brands Body Shop and purchased the business four years later. It was relocated in 1992 and he changed the name to Morgan Collision Center and Tire. He expanded the business to include mechanical repair and tires. Service is offered for cars to heavy duty trucks.
In 2006, Morgan opened Collision Masters in Spirit Lake which offers body work.
His involvement at Northwest Iowa Community College has included substitute teacher, Career day presenter, advisory committee member, teacher of E-M-S courses and internships.
Seven of his nine employees have graduated from N-C-C.
Mercy Gala honors Oncologist
(SIOUX CITY)–The Mercy Medical Center Foundation’s Fall Gala will feature a southwestern theme.
The gala will honor a pioneer in cancer treatment in Siouxland, Dr. John “Jack Michalak.” He was the first medical oncologist to begin a practice in Sioux City. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Dr. Michalak’s practice with Siouxland Hematology-Oncology Associates in Sioux City.
He’ll be honored with the Dr. George S. Spellman Annual Service Award.
Mercy Foundation Board President Dave Smetter says the oncologist’s selection as the Spellmann honoree is consistent with the qualities previous honorees have exhibited. Smetter says all of us know someone with a family member or a friend who has been impacted by cancer. According to Smetter, in many instances, those families have heart-warming stories that tell about the care their loved one received from Dr. Michalak.
The fund raiser November 6th at the Marina Inn and Conference Center in South Sioux City is being chaired by chairpersons Dr. Larry and Jacki Volz.
Special enforcement begins August 24
(ORANGE CITY)–The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is joining other Iowa law enforcement and officers in the U-S to crack down on drunk or drugged driving.
The “Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under Arrest,” effort is August 24th through September 6th.
Iowa reported 372 traffic deaths in 2009 and 92 of those were alcohol-related.
Iowa counties eligible for federal disaster aid
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Fifty Iowa counties are now eligible for federal disaster aid in the wake of recent severe weather and flooding.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Saturday that 18 more counties are eligible for aid. They include Sioux, Dickinson and Emmet Counties.
FEMA had made 32 counties eligible earlier.
State and local governments and certain private nonprofits can seek help from FEMA’s Public Assistance program.
The assistance program helps rebuild public infrastructure damage from the storms. The federal grants generally cover 75 percent of the approved eligible cost.

I-80 crash in Jasper County leaves 6 dead, 3 hurt
COLFAX, Iowa (AP) The Iowa State Patrol says a sixth person has died after a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 in Jasper County.
Spokeswoman Courtney Greene says the first call about the crash came in about 11:15 a.m. Saturday.
She says it appears that the driver of a westbound minivan fell asleep at the wheel, hit a semi and crossed the median.
The van was then struck head-on by an eastbound car.
Greene says all four people in the minivan have died. A man and a boy in the eastbound vehicle are also dead.
She says two people have minor injuries, and a third is in serious condition.
The accident shut down I-80 for about four hours.

Pedestrian killed by car in Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Cedar Rapids police say a pedestrian has been struck and killed on Interstate 380.
Police say officers responded to a call about the accident just after 1 a.m. Saturday.
Officers arrived at the scene just north of Glass Road to find that the pedestrian was dead.
Police aren’t releasing the names of anyone involved.
The northbound lanes of I-380 were closed for about two hours after the accident.
The crash remains under investigation.
1 dead after several separate fires across Iowa
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) Several separate fires across eastern Iowa have left one person dead.
Assistant Dubuque Fire Chief Rick Steines says one person died in an apartment fire Friday evening. Authorities haven’t released the person’s name.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
Authorities say lightning sparked a house fire in Washington late Friday. No one was injured, and the fire was contained to the roof and attic.
An air conditioning unit may be to blame for a blaze that damaged a vacant manufactured home in Cedar Rapids. Fire officials say no one was injured.
The owner was in the process of selling the home and had already removed all but a few possessions.
And firefighters are blaming discarded smoking material for a Saturday fire in North Liberty.
Ames officials to lift restrictions on water use
AMES, Iowa (AP) Ames officials are lifting restrictions on water use but say tap water still isn’t safe to drink.
The city was forced to shut down its water system Wednesday after broken water mains were discovered as a creek and river flooded large swaths of the city.
By Thursday, residents were allowed to use small amounts of water for showering or flushing toilets. Crews have repaired or isolated the broken mains.
City officials said residents should still use bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes and making ice.
U of Iowa aims to cut binge drinking numbers
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) University of Iowa officials want to move the school’s high percentage of binge drinking among students down to the national average.
But school officials acknowledge it may take years to reach that goal.
Binge drinking among University of Iowa students stands at 70 percent. That’s more than twice the national average of 33 percent, according to the American College Health Association.
School officials say the prevalence of binge drinking is linked to other alcohol-related problems among students.
For a role model, University of Iowa officials are looking to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where officials worked to reduce that school’s high rate of binge drinking among undergraduates.
Traffic cameras become Cedar Rapids crash witness
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Police in Cedar Rapids say a recent crash shows how the city’s newly installed traffic cameras can do more than catch red-light runners.
The intersection has a traffic camera monitoring it at all times. That camera was rolling when two drivers collided.
A 16-year-old girl says her car stalled at the intersection and when she finally got it going again, the light had turned red and she was in the middle of oncoming traffic.
The teen got a ticket, but can use the video to back up her story in court.
Police say the cameras act as an unbiased witness and help authorities get an accurate picture of what really happened.
