(LE MARS)–A nationally and internationally known female vocalist who is just releasing a new country recording will be in Le Mars.
Bob and Sheila Everhart of Anita and the Pioneer Ag Expo present the 35th annual National Old-Time Country and Bluegrass Festival and contest.
The event at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds August 30th to September 5th features more than 600 performers on 10 stages.
As Bob Everhart explains, Patty Page’s recordings of “the Tennessee Waltz,” and “How Much is that Doggie in the Window?” are examples of her phenomenal recording success.

Page will be inducted into America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame during the festival on September 4th. Page’s trip from San Diego to northwest Iowa will bring her to the area for several days and not just for the induction ceremony.
Other easily recognized artists performing at the festival include Johnny Cash’s daughter, Cindy Cash, and Grand Ole Opry star Bill Anderson.

Sioux Citian is a no-party candidate for Congress
(LE MARS)–Voters in northwest Iowa will decide a three-way race for Congress in November.
Secretary of State Mike Mauro received nomination papers to put Martin James Monroe of Sioux City on the ballot for Congressman from the Fifth District. Steve King of Kiron is the incumbent. The Republican is being challenged by attorney Matthew Campbell of Manning.
Monroe was nominated for the House of Representatives by petition and filed for the office Thursday, according to the secretary of state’s staff.
Most Statehouse candidates who represent northwest Iowa are unopposed in re-election bids. They include District 3 incumbent Chuck Soderberg of Le Mars, District 4 incumbent Dwayne Alons of Hull and District 53 incumbent Dan Huseman of Aurelia. Soderberg, Huseman and Alons are Republicans.
There’s a race to replace State Senator Ron Wieck of Sioux City. Republican party activist Bill Anderson of Pierson and retired Sioux City Police Officer Marty Pottebaum, a Democrat, are candidates for Wieck’s open seat.
The deadline for state and federal office was last week.
The candidate filing deadline for county offices is August 25th and that includes Extension Council.
Charges filed after ATV accident near Sioux Center
(SIOUX CENTER)–A Hull teenager had minor injuries after an A-T-V accident early Sunday morning.
The Sioux County sheriff’s office reports 16-year-old Trey Sandbulte of Hull was driving north on Grant Avenue, one mile northwest of Sioux Center.
Sandbulte lost control of the A-T-V after entering the intersection of Grant Avenue and 380th Street and fell off onto the roadway. .
Sandbulte was taken to the Sioux Center hospital by private vehicle where he was treated for minor injuries.
As a result of the investigation, the sheriff’s office 17-year-old Bradley Schelling of Hull and Sandbulte were each charged with an A-T-V violation.
Sioux Center Police assisted the sheriff’s office.
Bridge work detours traffic near Hornick
(SIOUX CITY)–Traffic will be detoured near Hornick beginning today (Monday).
Dean Herbst of the Iowa Department of Transportation reports bridge construction on Highway 141, east of Hornick, will detour traffic.
The detour uses Monona County roads K-64 and K-45. The four-way stop at the intersection of Monona County roads K-64 and E-24 will be changed to a two-way stop. The E-24 portion of the intersection will be controlled with a two-way stop and remain in effect after the project is completed.
Weather permitting, construction on the bridge will be completed by October.
Neb. man faces trial in bathtub drowning in Iowa
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) A Nebraska man has been ordered to stand trial in the drowning death of his 13-month-old child in a bathtub in Sioux City.
Court documents filed in Woodbury County District Court show 22-year-old Selvin Arevalo-Morga, of Omaha, has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment causing death and neglect. He’s being held in the county jail on $25,000 bond.
A trial has been set for Sept. 7. He faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted.
According to Court documents, Arevalo-Morga left his 13-month-old in the bathtub with a 3-year-old in May 2009, then left the bathroom to eat dinner.

Ames officials say water is safe to drink again
AMES, Iowa (AP) The tap water in Ames is safe to drink again.
Ames officials lifted the boil order at a news conference Sunday.
The city was forced to shut down its water system Wednesday after broken water mains were discovered as a creek and river flooded large swaths of the city.
By Thursday, residents were allowed to use small amounts of water for showering or flushing toilets. Crews have repaired or isolated the broken mains.
John Dunn, the city’s water and pollution control director, says there are no remaining restrictions on water.
Officials say residents should clear their plumbing systems by running faucets until the water turns cold.
Dishwashers should be run once with no dishes, and the first two batches of ice from icemakers should be discarded.
Omaha police say man died after horseplay at lake
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Authorities say a man who was pretending to drown eventually didn’t come back up for air at Carter Lake in east Omaha and later died at a hospital.
Police say the man had been fishing with friends on the west side of Levi Carter Park. Firefighters were called around 1 a.m. Monday when he didn’t come back to the surface.
Police have not released his name and other information about the incident.
The lake is shared by Omaha and Carter Lake, Iowa, which is surrounded by Omaha on the west side of the Missouri River.
The Iowa land originally was on the river’s east side, but flooding and shifting in 1877 left 2,000 acres on west side of the river, according to the city’s Web site.
Investigation ongoing in apartment fire in Dubuque
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) Authorities are still trying to determine what caused a fire at an apartment building in Dubuque that left one person dead.
The fire broke out Friday night at the Washington Park Place apartments. Fire Chief Dan Brown says it started in a second-floor room. Authorities have not released the name of the dead person.
The fire displaced about 30 residents.
Alliant apologizes for spraying in SE Iowa
BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) Alliant Energy has apologized for the application of herbicides to control plants beneath power lines in southeast Iowa.
The utility says a contractor was hired to trim the plants, but used chemicals, which drifted outside the easement, include farm crops.
Alliant spokesman Ryan Stensland would not identify the contractor.
He says because the plants were growing faster than the contractor could keep it trimmed, the company used herbicides.
Concerns about the spraying arose during an Aug. 10 meeting of the Lee County Board of Supervisors.
Residents have complained about dead trees and shrubs left in the wake of the spraying. Stensland says the contractor has agreed to clean up the dead plants.
Iowa State Patrol keeps Iowans safe for 75 years
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The Iowa State Patrol is celebrating keeping Iowans safer for 75 years.
The patrol dates back to 1935. Its beginnings are credited to Ola Babcock Miller, Iowa’s first woman secretary of state. She launched a crusade aimed at unsafe vehicles, excessive speed and drunken drivers by creating a force of 15 motor vehicle inspectors within her office.
While the Depression-era mud roads have become high-speed highways, the patrol’s core mission remains the same reducing injuries and fatalities.
Col. Patrick Hoye, who took over the patrol in 2007, says his agency has had to target its resources in these budget-tightening times by focusing on 22 counties where more traffic fatalities, accidents and violations occur.
