Pumpkinland is family outing

(ORANGE CITY) According to Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey “There is no better way to enjoy fall in Iowa with your family than to head out to an apple orchard or pumpkin patch.” Pumpkinland, located just north of Orange City, is owned and operated by Dave and Helen Huitink.

Dave Huitink says the business began due to the entrepreneurial spirit of their kids.

Pumpkinland in Orange City features a petting zoo and two corn mazes. This year they celebrate 10 years of corn mazes by “Cruisin thru a Decade” with a car-shaped maze. Pumpkinland is open until Halloween, Monday-Saturday from 10am until dark.

Business is going well this year despite what Dave calls “a strange growing season.” The pumpkin patch was planted next to the waterway and washed out multiple times, resulting in a loss of about a third of their crop. Dave says the flooding wasn’t the only problem caused by rain.

After 21 years of business the Huitinks have expanded beyond pumpkins. Fall produce includes: pumpkins, many varieties of squash, gourds, and many types of corn. Helen added that they have crafts and wide variety of baked goods available.
