(SIOUX CITY)–A Denison man faces up to life in prison for a drug conviction in federal court in Sioux City.
According to the U-S Attorney’s office, 37-year-old Jaime Lupian was convicted of conspiracy to distribute meth and possession of meth with intent to distribute the drug.
Lupian pled guilty to being involved in a conspiracy to distribute at least seven pounds of meth in the Cherokee and Crawford County areas from about February to April.
Authorities searched his Denison residence in April and seized about three pounds of meth, packaging materials, a cutting agent and about 72-thousand dollars in cash.
He’s being held for the U-S Marshal’s Service until he is sentenced.
(LE MARS)–Funds to preserve the history of Plymouth County will be raised during the 11th annual “Great Garage and Bake Sale.”
The Plymouth County Historical Museum fund raiser is November 11th through November 13th in the “Old Central” gym.
Anyone who’d like to clear their house of potential garage sale items may take them to the museum Tuesdays through Saturdays. Hours are from 1-5 in the afternoon.
Julie Leaverton (lehv-er-ton) is chairing this year’s sale in cooperation with other Museum volunteers.\
A bake sale and concessions stand will also be open throughout the sale in the Gym lobby. The garage sale is free. There is a $5 for the Sneak Preview Thursday, November 11th from 5-6 p-m.
(DES MOINES)–Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa will host a bully-proof workshop for fifth grade girls.
Girls who have ever felt hurt or betrayed by one of their friends are encouraged to attend and learn what to do and what to say when other girls are mean.
The Girls Scouts October 18th workshop in Storm Lake will be re-scheduled to a date to be determined.
Volunteers are needed for the workshops. Before each workshop, there is a training course for adults only. After the training, adults will help facilitate the girl workshop. There is no cost for the adult training.
Information on adult training is available through the Girls Scouts of Greater Iowa based in Des Moines.
(SIOUX CENTER)–A world unseen by many northwest Iowans will be presented at one of four Dordt College Broader Vision Seminars this month.
The Fourth World will be presented by digital media professor Mark Volkers and his students on Friday October 15 at 11 am in the Ribbens Academic Complex Lecture Hall. Their documentary will offer a tour digitally of some of the worst slums in the world.
The second seminar is on Energy Stewardships and is also at 11 a.m. The program will highlight a variety of research, design and classroom projects in Dordt’s engineering department
The Defender Capital Management Club is the focus of a 3 p-m seminar in the Campus Center’s Vermeer Conference Center. Presenters, including Dr. John Visser of Dordt’s business Department will explain ways Dordt students are getting real world experience in investing and managing money through the Capital Management Club.
The final topic of the weekend seminars will be “Off Campus Programs,” at 11 a.m. on October 16th at the Vermeer Conference Center. This will include opportunities for students to study in Africa and Asia.
The seminars are free and open to the public.
Iowa AG candidates offer different priorities
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The Republican and Democratic candidates for Iowa attorney general offer contrasts in nearly every way.
Democrat Tom Miller has served as attorney general since 1978, except for a four-year stretch beginning in 1990 when he ran for governor. Now 66, Miller faces 34-year-old Republican Brenna Findley in the Nov. 2 election.
Miller says he’s stressed the needs of the public, including creating a consumer protection division that focuses on prosecuting fraud.
Findley has focused attention on issues such as her belief that the attorney general’s office should file a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of federal health care reforms. She also backs repeal of Iowa’s gay marriage law.
Miller declined to challenge the health care law and says gay marriage hasn’t hurt the state.
Trial venue changed for accused in hatchet murder
EAGLE GROVE, Iowa (AP) The trial of an Eagle Grove man charged with the murder of a 19-year-old friend is being moved to another county.
The suspect, 20-year-old Lucas Faulkner, is accused of killing Devin Resh of Webster City by hitting him over the head with a hatchet. He pleaded not guilty in June.
Judge Colleen Weiland granted a change of venue to Bremer County on Thursday. The trial’s scheduled to start on Nov. 16.
Investigators have said Faulkner killed Resh last May while they were fishing at an old gravel pit northwest of Eagle Grove.
Ames, ISU increase weekend traffic enforcement
AMES, Iowa (AP) Police officers in Ames say they plan increased traffic enforcement over the weekend.
The effort is part of the “Put the Brakes on Fatalities” initiative but comes the weekend after an Iowa State University student was struck and killed by a vehicle near the school’s football stadium after a game. Police from both Ames and the university will participate.
Ames police chief Chuck Cychosz says recent traffic fatalities in the city make the initiative even more important. He says drivers should slow down, be aware of surroundings and use caution around bicyclists, pedestrians and railroads.
University officials say 21-year-old Jonathon Arnold Brown of Ottumwa died Thursday morning after the Saturday accident. Brown was a junior and was studying computer engineering.
Iowans shouldn’t see increase in heating costs
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Iowa’s two largest utilities say heating costs should largely stay the same this winter.
The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports that MidAmerican Energy expects a 3.7 percent decrease in average residential natural gas costs through April. And Alliant Energy projects costs to heat homes this winter should be about the same as they were last winter.
Alliant expects its average residential natural gas customer to spend about $620 for heat from October through March.
The utilities say they see high national storage inventory of natural gas and lower demand for the fuel because of the sluggish economy. MidAmerican Energy says pipeline capacity has improved, making more gas available to consumers.

Renovation set for Iowa’s historic Dodge home
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) The Historic General Dodge House in Council Bluffs has plans for a facelift.
Council Bluffs parks director Larry Foster tells The Daily Nonpareil that plans call for removing a walkway, plaza and retaining wall. Foster says they’ve had problems with deteriorated bricks that have come loose, creating a situation where visitors could trip.
Dodge House board member Dick Miller says the goal is to restore the home to “what it was in the 1880s.”
The home is on the National Register of Historic Places and the estimated $140,000 project has been approved by the National Park Service. The home of Gen. Grenville Dodge is about 141 years old. Dodge was a veteran of the Civil War and according to the house’s website has been called “the greatest railroad builder of all time.”

Japanese delegation in Dubuque area
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) A delegation of 17 people from Japan will be in the Dubuque area for several days as part of a program that endeavors to foster peace and understanding between nations.
Their itinerary includes stops at the Dubuque Farmers Market, a trolley tour of Dubuque, a Mississippi River cruise and a farewell dinner at the Diamond Jo Casino.
The visit by the Japanese is arranged through Friendship Force International founded in 1977
Phyllis Lee is one of the host organizers. She tells The (Dubuque) Telegraph Herald that there’s more to do in the area than they’ll have time to show the visitors.
Lee started her involvement with Friendship Force in 1979 when she traveled to Guatemala.
