(BRUNSVILLE)–Brunsville hosts a town feud as part of fun and fund raising for the community’s centennial this summer.
Chilli and chicken noodle soup and a ham sandwich will be served beginning at 5:30 in the afternoon on February 5th.
The town feud follows at 8 p-m with six teams from Akron, Brunsville, West Le Mars, Struble, Craig and Merrill.
Adult education begins January 24th at Le Mars Community
(LE MARS)–Hands-on learning is featured for the Winter Term of Adult Education at Le Mars Community Schools.
Lorene Rexwinkel of Le Mars coordinates the program offered jointly by Western Iowa Tech and the Le Mars Community School District. The Le Mars Community Board of Education offers free tuition for those age 60 or over.
The computer instruction includes basics such as file management of a computer and more advanced training such as Excel 2007 and web design.
Quilting, knitting, tatting and crocheting are taught for beginners. Skills to capture images are the focus of digital camera classes where students bring their cameras.
Yoga and Mah Jongg are other recreational course offerings.
Classes begin next week with registration underway now through the Western Iowa Tech Le Mars campus by calling 546-7338.
Remsen power outage planned Monday
(REMSEN)–Remsen Municipal Utilities has scheduled a power outage for Remsen customers between Harrison and Marion Streets along with customers on Nothem Avenue on Monday, January 17th at 5 a-m.
The duration of the outage will be about one-half hour. The outage is needed to perform some sub-station maintenance. Remsen Municipal Utilities apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

St. Luke’s offers pulmonary care update
(SIOUX CITY) Pulmonary care is the focus of a conference hosted by St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center.
The latest in pulmonary care news will be discussed at the Tri-State Pulmonary Care Conference February 25th.
Those providing information include the director of respiratory care at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Africa experience motivates a Spencer woman to make a diference
(SHELDON) Seeing people without shoes in Africa motivated a Spencer woman to help those in need throughout the world.
Robin Barber and her husband, Duane, their families and staff at Don Pierson Ford started a communitywide effort for Soles4Souls.
Donations of shoes and money were collected in the bed of a truck in the Spencer auto dealership and totalled 717 pairs of shoes.
Village Northwest Unlimited accepted the delivery of donations to provide work opportunities for the 180 individuals receiving services through Village programs. The Sheldon organization processes shoes for Soles4Souls which are distributed around the world.
Tea Party rally focuses in gay marriage in Iowa
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) About 35 people gathered for a Tea Party rally in Council Bluffs calling for a ban on gay marriage and stricter abortion laws in Iowa.
Republican legislator Kim Pearson, of Pleasant Hill, was among the speakers at Saturday afternoon’s gathering at the Mid-America Center. The Daily Nonpareil reports that Pearson said a ban would be quicker to pass than a constitutional amendment.
In 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a state law limiting marriage to heterosexual couples violated the constitutional right of equal protection. Voters removed three of those justices in November after a campaign targeted their support of the ruling.
Pearson and two of her colleagues have drafted legislation to impeach the remaining four justices.
Iowa man expected to plead guilty in kidnapping
MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) A Mason City man accused of kidnapping a woman and burglarizing her home is expected to plead guilty.
KIMT-TV reports a change-of-plea hearing for Michael Winters is scheduled for Tuesday. Details of a plea deal were not released.
Winters had been set to stand trial Jan. 25 on charges of first-degree kidnapping and first-degree burglary in the June 7 incident. He could face up to life in prison if convicted.
Court records say Winters forced the woman from her home in Mason City and took her to a residence in Rockford. She was released later that day.
2 arrested in mailbox bombing in Hampton, Iowa
HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) Two men face charges in a mailbox bombing earlier this month in Hampton.
Police say 18-year-old Ryan Huffman and 19-year-old Zachary Bale, both of Hampton, were arrested on suspicion of reckless use of a fire or explosives.
An explosive device went off Jan. 7 in a residential mailbox. Police say Bale had possession of explosive material that matched evidence from the scene.
The men each face up to a year in jail and fines of $1,500 if convicted.
No numbers were listed for either man.
Police reviewing 911 call in Iowa student’s death
DECORAH, Iowa (AP) A student found dead earlier this month on the Luther College campus made a 911 call shortly before his death.
KGAN-TV reports that Decorah police and the state Division of Criminal Investigation are reviewing the call from 24-year-old Nana Kwasi Baffour-Awuah.
The student’s body was found Jan. 1 in the snow on the baseball diamond on campus. Police have not said how he died.
A college spokesman says Baffour-Awuah, who’s better known on campus as Nabby (pronounced “knobby”), was a senior majoring in information systems and business management. He was from Tema, Ghana.
Luther College is a liberal arts school affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Its website says it has about 2,500 students.
Woman dies after stabbing in Council Bluffs
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) A 39-year-old woman found on a street in western Iowa has died from injuries she suffered in a stabbing.
Council Bluffs police Lt. Bob Brietzke tells KJAN-AM that Tammy Lynn Rocha was found on a street corner Friday night. He says she was taken to a hospital in Omaha, where she died.
Police are still investigating. No arrests have been made.
Police say Rocha lived in Council Bluffs.
Patrol IDs 2 killed in crash last weekend in Iowa
STUART, Iowa (AP) The Iowa State Patrol has released the names of two people killed in a crash on a snowy stretch of Interstate 80 west of Des Moines.
The Des Moines Register reports the victims of last Sunday’s crash were 55-year-old Richard Gould and his wife, 52-year-old Connie.
The patrol says the couple’s pickup slid across an Interstate 80 median and collided with a semitrailer. Two people in the semi suffered minor injuries.
Authorities blamed the crash on snowy conditions. A storm creeping east across the state covered most highways. The accident occurred a little before 4 p.m. just east of Stuart, closing eastbound I-80 lanes for nearly four hours.
Feds wrap up investigation of Iowa chopper crash
ELKADER, Iowa (AP) Federal authorities have completed their investigation of a July helicopter crash in northwest Iowa.
A recent report from the National Transportation Safety Board cited by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says the chopper crashed after becoming tangled in utility lines in Clayton County.
The Bell helicopter crashed July 23 while spraying crops. The pilot was not hurt.
The NTSB report says the pilot acknowledged he should have been more alert for obstacles.
