Hope Haven’s 16t annual Gospel Music Festival is Friday, June 17th and Saturday, June 18th. The benefit for Hope Haven provides continous music from 11 in the morning until ten at night each day.
About 25 different groups from six states are scheduled to perform.
(SHELDON)–The Independence Day celebration in Sheldon features a group that’s changing the face of A Cappella performances.
Marcoux (mark-o) Corner will present the outdoor concert at the July 1st celebration hosted by Village Northwest Unlimited.
The concert at seven in the evening on the Village campus is part of activities for the entire family. They include carnival booths, fire truck rides, horse drawn wagon rides, a petting zoo and more.
Marcoux Corner’s core members grew up in the Crookston (crooks-ton) area of northland Minnesota. The group started at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and has performed from Florida to Alaska. They’re now based in Minneapolis and entertain audiences from seven to seventy.
(SIOUX CITY)–High school juniors who want to know more about a Sioux City school are being invited to Campus Visit Day.
Briar Cliff University hosts juniors,their families and friends. They’ll have the opportunity to learn about academics, scholarships and financial aid opportunities.
Tours and a panel of Briar Cliff students will offer insight on campus life. Student leaders and faculty will also meet with the high school students.

The theme for the festivale June 30th is “The Krewe De Charlie Sioux Drops the Party Bomb.” Thousands of Mardi Gras beads will be tossed out free to the crowd. The Cajun Buffet is prior to the Festivale beginning at 5:30 in the afternoon with authentic Cajun food under a large tent on Pierce Street.

Iowa airman’s funeral draws hundreds to streets

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) Hundreds of people lined the streets outside an Ottumwa church to show their support for an airman killed last month in Afghanistan when a bomb exploded.
The mourners and well-wishers on Saturday crowded the intersection where St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church is located. The Ottumwa Courier reports that inside, family members of U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph Hamski attended a funeral Mass for the 28-year-old Ottumwa man.
Flooding forces family of SD governor to improvise
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard is among those who have been forced to change family plans because of flooding.
His son, Chris Daugaard, is scheduled to marry Emily Conway of Sioux City, Iowa, on Saturday. As part of the festivities, the governor and first lady were hosts for the wedding rehearsal dinner Friday night.
The event was supposed to be held in Dakota Dunes. Gov. Daugaard earlier this week called for the evacuation of that area because of Missouri River flooding.
KCRR radio reports that the dinner was moved to Sioux City.
AP Interview: Huntsman mapping out 2012 strategy
GORHAM, N.H. (AP) Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman is mapping out a 2012 presidential campaign that skips early-voting Iowa to focus on New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida.
He’s not yet an announced GOP candidate for 2012, but he sure sounded like on in an Associated Press interview Saturday in New Hampshire.
Iowa seems to be a no-go because of Huntsman’s opposition to subsidies for corn-based ethanol.
Huntsman says he’ll announce his next steps by the end of June. He’s plotting a political schedule that suggests he’ll soon be a formal candidate.
Only five weeks ago Huntsman stepped down as President Barack Obama’s ambassador to China.
Iowa officials warn of blue-green algae blooms
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says residents should be on the lookout for toxic blue-green algae blooms as the weather rapidly turns warm in the coming days.
Sun Valley Lake, a private lake in Taylor County, reported a small fish kill on Saturday in an area of the lake that appeared to have a blue-green algae bloom. The algae can deplete oxygen making fish vulnerable.
Officials says the lake will be sampled for microcystin, a toxic product of blue-green algae.
Officials also warn that people and pets should not be in contact contaminated by or that appears to be contaminated with blue-green algae.
2 sentenced in deadly Cedar Rapids robbery

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Two men convicted for their roles in the slaying of a Cedar Rapids man during a robbery have each been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Gabriel Taylor and Johven Lee pleaded guilty in March to first-degree robbery for their role in the Jan. 11 robbery and slaying of 26-year-old Kevin Bell. Police say Bell was shot in the head by a third man, 18-year-old Denem Null, and died the next day.
The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports that in exchange for their pleas, the state dismissed first-degree murder charges against 18-year-old Taylor and 21-year-old Lee.
Null pleaded in March to second-degree murder and first-degree robbery as part of a plea agreement and will be sentenced Friday.
Federal officials say Iowa rape suspect in Uganda
DES MOINES, Iowa. (AP) The U.S. Marshals Service is working to have a Des Moines rape suspect returned to Iowa from Uganda in east Africa.
A year ago, 44-year-old Napoleon Mbonyunkiza (em-bon-yun-KEY’-zah) failed to show up for a court hearing in Des Moines to face charges of third-degree sexual assault, neglect of a dependent adult and dependent adult abuse.
Police say DNA evidence shows Mbonyunkiza impregnated a severely disabled woman entrusted to his care. He was arrested and released from jail in Des Moines on $30,000 bond in May 2010.
Mike Powell with the U.S. Marshals Service tells the Des Moines Register that Uganda and the United States do not have an extradition treaty, but that Ugandan officials are being cooperative.
Iowa school board votes to fire accused principal

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) The Dubuque Community School Board has voted to fire an elementary school principal accused of hiding a camera in a boys restroom at the school and of downloading child pornography.
The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports that the board voted 6-0 in an emergency meeting early Saturday to fire Sageville Elementary School Principal Robert Burke.
Superintendent Larie Godinez recommended firing Burke after what she said was his admission of guilt.
The 43-year-old Burke has pleaded not guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. A criminal complaint says an FBI agent downloaded eight images of child pornography from a computer that was later traced to Burke’s residence in Dubuque.
The complaint says Burke admitted to investigators that he placing a camera in the bathroom. He denied he had molested any children.
