(Le Mars) Hy Vee in Le Mars has added a dietitian to their full time staff. Maurice native Tonya Huenink recently graduated from Iowa State with her degree in dietetics.
She says she was excited to join the Hy-Vee staff at the beginning of the month.

Huenink is available at the store for tours, either individually or in a group, and starting in September she’ll be able to work with individuals one on one. She is also available for group presentations.
Le Mars Hy-Vee Manager Peter Streit (pr: straight) says that overall Hy-Vee has 100 dieticians employed at their stores. He says hiring a dietitian was not something he had to do, but thought it would be a good move for the community.

Streit adds that patrons may notice changes at the store including a change to food that’s prepared on-site, to physical changes in the store. Another thing to notice in store is NuVal stickers near each food item.
NuVal is a food scoring program that tells shoppers how good a food is for you. The higher the score the better the food is for you, with 100 being the highest. For example: broccoli has a score of 100, ground beef a score of 30. Huenink says that the score next to the food help shoppers make wiser choices.

(Orange City) — The Plymouth-LeMars-Sioux SWAT team was called to action on Tuesday to help apprehend a man wanted on a previous warrant. Thirty-two year old Gilberto Trejo-Olmedo (Tree-ho Ol-mee-do) of rural Orange City was arrested following a three-hour standoff with law enforcement officials.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s office received a tip advising of Trejo-Olmedo’s whereabouts. The man in question was wanted for an incident this spring involving operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The tip also said Trejo-Olmedo was presumed to be armed and dangerous.
Officers used CS gas to force the man from his basement of his home. Trejo-Olmedo was charged with an OWI, interference with official acts and disorderly conduct. He is being held in the Sioux County jail.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Attorney General Tom Miller says a judge has penalized a northwest Iowa pharmaceutical company $20,000 for wastewater violations at a storage lagoon in rural Sioux County.
Miller sued Sioux Pharm Inc. of Sioux Center in 2009 claiming it illegally discharged wastewater into surface and groundwater. The company makes a nutritional supplement from animal cartilage that is used to alleviate pain.
Miller says in a consent decree filed on Monday, Sioux County Judge Edward Jacobson ordered the company to permanently close the lagoon by removing the contents and leveling the site by Friday. The company has already closed the site and agreed to no longer apply the wastewater.
A telephone call to the company’s attorney, Lloyd Bierma of Sioux Center, was not immediately returned.
(Sioux City) — A convicted felon who possessed firearms was sentenced to more than ten years in federal prision.
Francisco Lee Juarez, (You-are-ez) age 35 of Sioux city received the prison term after a guilty plea to one count of a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm with an altered serial number. In a plea agreement, Juarez admitted he set up a deal to trade firearms for drugs.
Juarez is a felon, having been previously convicted of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. Juarez was sentenced to 124 months imprisionment.
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) The closing of a Fort Dodge plant in 2014 will eliminate nearly 100 jobs, though many of those employees could still find work within the company.
Boehringer (BOH-ringer) Ingelheim Vetmedica spokeswoman Cory Sullivan says officials recently decided to gradually remove production from the plant after pharmaceutical giant Pfizer opted to shift work away from the facility.
Sullivan says about 90 percent of the work done at the plant is manufacturing Pfizer products.
But the company is preparing to expand its research capabilities at its main Fort Dodge facility. That expansion will yield nearly 60 new jobs.
Sullivan also says the company hopes the majority of the workers at the plant set for closure can transfer to another facility.
Palin tells Fox News she’s considering running for president
WASHINGTON (AP) Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she’ll announce her intentions for the White House in late August or early September.
Palin told Fox News’ Sean Hannity Wednesday night that she thinks she could win a campaign against President Barack Obama, a sentiment first reported in a Newsweek cover story.
Palin says she would campaign for a candidate with “good executive experience” and a “servant’s heart”. At the moment, though, she says she doesn’t see that candidate in the Republican field.
Palin says she’s thinking about offering herself up “in the name of service”.
Pawlenty won’t sign Iowa group’s marriage pledge
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Republican Tim Pawlenty says he won’t sign a pledge written by a conservative Iowa group that asks presidential candidates to denounce same-sex marriage rights, pornography and forms of Islamic law.
Pawlenty said Wednesday he agrees with the principles behind the Family Leader’s Marriage Vow. But he says he prefers “to choose my own words, especially seeking to show compassion to those who are in broken families through no fault of their own.”
The former Minnesota governor is the second major candidate to decline the pledge, following former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s decision Tuesday. Two Republicans, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, have signed it.
Pawlenty’s announcement coincides with the release of a new radio ad and web video where he and his wife discuss their faith.
Man dies after being stabbed in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Des Moines police say a man who was stabbed several times earlier this month has died.
Police say 21-year-old Paris Smith, of Des Moines died at a hospital. He was stabbed on July 2. WHO-TV in Des Moines reported Smith’s death on Wednesday.
Police believe Smith was trying to break up a fight when he was attacked. Four people were arrested. Three men are currently charged with attempted murder. A fourth man is being held on a material witness warrant.
Former Humboldt official released from prison

DAKOTA CITY, Iowa (AP) A former Humboldt city administrator is out of prison and on probation for stealing about $100,000 from a nonprofit group and the city.
Lorie Ricklefs pleaded guilty in January to first-degree theft and felonious misconduct in office. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison. In May, she asked the court to reconsider her prison sentence.
The Messenger in Fort Dodge says Ricklefs was released from custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections following a court order on Wednesday that she serve three years of probation rather than finish her prison term.
Ricklefs admitted stealing the money from Mid-Iowa Growth Partnership, a nine-county economic development group, and the city from 2007 to 2010. She must pay restitution.
Former Adair city employees charged with theft
GREENFIELD, Iowa (AP) A former Adair city clerk and her son have been charged with stealing city funds.
The Iowa attorney general’s office says 63-year-old Linda Nichols and her son, 41-year-old Terry Nichols, a city street department employee, were each charged Monday with first-degree theft and felonious misconduct in office.
There is no attorney listed for them in court records. They appeared in court Monday and were released.
A state auditor’s report in May found $119,000 in questionable spending for the city of Adair from 2007 through 2010.
Prosecutors say the Nichols accepted inflated or unwarranted payments, failed to pay municipal utility bills, used city funds to buy goods for their personal use and falsified public records.
Ex-principal pleads not guilty to new porn charges
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) A former Iowa elementary school principal has pleaded not guilty to charges that he produced child pornography.
Former Sageville Elementary School Principal Robert Burke entered the plea Wednesday during his arraignment in federal court.
Burke was arrested at his home in Dubuque last month after investigators say they traced his computer to child pornography. Federal prosecutors say Burke admitted during an interview that he hid a video camera in the boys’ bathroom to capture images of students.
Lawsuit over Iowa girl’s slaying gets new trial
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The Iowa Court of Appeals has ordered a new trial in a lawsuit that claims a school bus company was negligent in the death of Waterloo girl who was killed after being dropped off at the wrong bus stop.
The court issued its ruling Wednesday, saying a jury should decide whether First Student Inc. was negligent for letting Donnisha Hill off at a wrong bus stop.
A Black Hawk County District Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Hill’s parents against First Student Inc., saying the 13-year-old girl’s death was beyond the bus company’s responsibility.
Hill failed to get off at the right stop on Oct. 27, 2006. Her body was found the next day in Illinois.
A spokeswoman for First Student declined comment on the suit.
Iowa toddler’s mom drops wrongful death lawsuit

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) The mother of a Cedar Rapids toddler is dropping a wrongful death lawsuit against the child’s father and his ex-girlfriend, who are charged with first-degree murder in the girl’s death.
Kamryn Schlitter died in March 2010, a week after medics found her suffering from seizure-like symptoms at a Hiawatha apartment. Her death was ruled a homicide.
The Gazette reports the toddler’s mother, Nicole King, filed for dismissal of the lawsuit on July 7. In the lawsuit, she accused Zyriah Schlitter, of Cedar Rapids, and Amy Parmer, of Hiawatha, of causing her daughter’s death.
The Cedar Rapids newspaper says King’s attorney, Mark Liabo, was out of his office until Friday. Penny Galvin, a victim’s advocate, told The Gazette that King declined to comment on why she’s dropping the lawsuit.
