(LeMars) — The LeMars Fire and Rescue Units had what was referred to as a “very productive and succcessful” training session while similating an ammonia leak emergency last evening. The training occured at the Dean’s Food milk processing plant.
Fire chief Dave Schipper says he was pleased with the performance of his crew, and of the employees of Dean’s Foods. Schipper says Dean’s Foods held an employee evacuation prior to the arrival of the fire and rescue units, and everyone was accounted for in the training session. The LeMars Fire official says it was a good training excercise.

Schipper says sometimes communications among all groups can prove to be trouble-some, but last evening, he said if there was a surprise, it was the fact the communications worked so well.

Schipper served as incident commander, a role that allows him to direct the various crews, as well as step back and analyze the performances.

The LeMars Fire Chief hopes that similar training sessions can become an annual event for the safety of Dean Foods employees and for the safety of the LeMars community.
CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) – Nearly 20 Charles City homes will be
torn down this fall, more than three years after they were ruined
by floodwater. Once the houses are gone, the land will be used as
green space.
CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) – The family of a 54-year-old
crop-dusting pilot whose helicopter crashed in northeast Iowa
earlier this month says he’s left a hospital. Fifty-four-year-old
Michael Mullenbach (MUHL’-ehn-bah) is slowly recovering at home.
The crash remains under investigation.
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) – Paperwork with the names and Social
Security numbers of two dozen guards and prison employees was found
in an old desk in an inmate barbershop at the prison in Fort Dodge.
A jail officer found the documents. The prison’s warden says he’s
confident inmates didn’t see the papers, but there’s no way to be
100 percent sure.
ROCKFORD, Iowa (AP) – The body of a U.S. Navy SEAL team member
who was killed in Afghanistan will arrive in Rockford this
afternoon. Petty Officer Jon Tumilson was one of 30 people who died
in Afghanistan earlier this month when a helicopter was shot down.
A funeral for the 35-year-old will be held tomorrow.
