(LE MARS) — 40 to 50 percent of Americans who live to the age of 65 will have skin
cancer at least once-this is according to a press release from Floyd Valley Hospital.
After a summer of sun exposure, is your skin safe? Floyd Valley Hospital will be hosting
a Skin Cancer Screening this Wednesday at the Family Medicine Clinic, next to the
hospital, in Le Mars. Kari Daale is the Education Coordinator at the hospital. She tells us who should consider being screened.

Early screening and detection is important for any kind of cancer, and with skin cancer
being so common, now is the time to get checked. If you’re looking at a spot
on your skin right now and aren’t sure whether or not it’s worth it, Daale suggests
considering the ABC’s.

It’s also important to take preventative measure when being in the sun, even in the cooler months. The easiest is to stay out of the sun at peak times-between 12n and 4, and to seek shade. Otherwise it’s suggested to: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen-with spf of 15 or more, slap on a hat and wrap around sunglasses.
The Skin Cancer Screening at Family Medicine Clinic in Le Mars is Wednesday, September 14th from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Floyd Valley Hospital recommends wearing loose clothing around any suspected areas and says to anticipate that there may be a wait, as it $2 check is done on a first come first served basis.
