(Cherokee) — The names and the details to that three car accident that occured Thursday afternoon on Highway 59, south of Cherokee, are now known. The accident claimed the lives of four people…a driver and three passengers.
Killed in the collision were William Eubank, age 83, of Quimby and his passengers, Phyllis Eubank 83, also of Quimby, Kenneth Slentz, 84, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Dorthy Slentz, 83, also of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Cherokee Sheriff’s office reports the Eubank vehicle first rear-ended a pickup truck driven by Ronald Brown, 59 of Cherokee; then crossed over the centerline and hit head-on with a truck driven by 50 year-old Daniel Maloy of Alta. Maloy was injured in the accident and was transported to Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Several employees of the RJ Thomas manufacturing rushed to the scene and used several fire extinguishers to put out two fires that had occurred in or around the vehicles following the accident before responders were able to arrive. The Cherokee Sheriff’s office is investigating that accident.
(Des Moines) — Governor Terry Branstad has ordered all flags to be flown at half staff through the weekend. Flags are to be at half-staff from today (Friday) at 8 a.m. until Monday at 8 a.m. The order is to honor volunteer fire fighter Micheal Collins and Iowa Highway Patrol trooper Mark Toney. Collins lost his life while directing traffic on Interstate 80 around an accident. He was struck by a motorist and killed. Toney was on patrol when he was killed in a single car accident.
(LeMars) — Earlier this week, the LeMars City Council decided to install new water meters to change out the aging water meters in town. City administrator, Scott Langel says the move is needed to assure accuracy and it will ultimately save the city money.

(LeMars) — City councilwoman, Delana Irhke has submitted her nomination papers today seeking re-election to the Ward 2 seat for the LeMars city council. She joins Councilman John Rexwinkel and Mayor Richard Kirchoff. They too, have submitted nomination papers and are seeking re-election.
(LeMars) — A new frisbee golf course located on the west side of town near the Floyd Park celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday. The course was designed by Ben Sitzman and like regular golf, the course features 18 holes. Sitzman says frisbee golf is gaining in popularity, and the course is ready for its first tournament to be held this Sunday. Sitzman anticipates up to 60 competitors will be playing frisbee golf at that tournament.
(LeMars) — Floyd Valley Community Health Service will again be providing flu vaccine throughout Plymouth County this autumn. The vaccine costs is $25 and can be either as an injection or as a nasal spray. Deb Steffen is the Community Health Manager at Floyd Valley Hospital. She says the seasonal influenza vaccine covers three strains of influenza.

People who should not be vaccinated would include those with an allergy to chicken eggs, or if you have had a reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past. Public immunization clinics will begin on Friday, October 7th at the Hinton Community Center and will continue throughout the county until Friday, November 11th at the Floyd Valley Conference Center. Flu vaccines will also be dispensed at the Well Aware Community Health Fair at the LeMars Convention Center on Wednesday, October 12th.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A Spencer pharmacist has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for health care fraud. David Easton of Everly had pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicaid and his own insurance provider out of $200,000. Easton was also ordered to make restitution to Medicaid and Coventry Health Care.
