(Undated) Le Mars and Hinton Fire Departments responded to seperate calls Saturday. Le Mars firefighters were called after 1 pm to the 800 block of 6th street southwest to investigate a suspicious odor. Officials notified Mid American gas representatives, who cleared a trailer quarters. No injuries were reported. The Hinton fire department were called to 33505 Hickory Avenue to a garage fire a little before 6 pm Saturday. Hinton fire fighters were assisted by the Sioux City fire department. No injuries were reported. Fire officials were at the scene for about two hours.
Good Samaritan hurt while putting out Iowa fire

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) – A Melbourne man has been hurt in an
explosion while attempting to put out a fire in a cornfield west of
Marshalltown.
Charlie Snyder told the Times-Republican that he came upon the
fire Thursday evening and tried to put it out. He previously worked
with a fire department.
As Snyder tended to the fire, something exploded. He says he was
knocked up to 10 feet sideways. He was taken to a hospital for
treatment of burns and other injuries and released on Friday.
Marshall County Sheriff Ted Kamatchus says the fire is under
investigation.
Driver pleads not guilty in death of Iowa girl

NORTHWOOD, Iowa (AP) – A driver accused of hitting a 7-year-old
girl who was walking to a stopped school bus in rural Worth County
has pleaded not guilty.
Aaron Gunderson of Northwood faces charges of vehicular homicide
and leaving the scene of an injury accident. KIMT-TV that the
31-year-old Gunderson entered his not guilty plea to the charges
Friday.
The Iowa State Patrol has said Kadyn Halverson of rural Kensett,
was walking to the bus that had its lights flashing and stop sign
extended when she was struck by Gunderson on May 10. He fled the
scene. The girl died of her injuries.
During Friday’s hearing, the judge lowered Gunderson’s bond from
$85,000 to $25,000. He was still being held Saturday in the Worth
County jail.
Iowa inmate missing from work-release facility
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – An inmate at a work-release facility in
Waterloo has been listed as an escapee.
The Iowa Department of Corrections reports 27-year-old Dennis
Brown Junior took an unexcused absence from the facility on Friday.
He hasn’t been seen since.
Brown is serving a 35-year sentence for robbery and burglary out
of Black Hawk County. He’s been in prison since March 2002 and was
transferred to the Waterloo facility in July.
Investigation of downtown Iowa City fire delayed

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The investigation of a fire that damaged
several Iowa City buildings has been delayed.
Fire Marshal John Grier tells the Press-Citizen (that there are
concerns about safety in the bagel shop where last weekend’s fire
is believed to have started and that time is needed for the
building owners to contact their insurers.
Grier expects to get inside the bagel shop on Tuesday.
The building that houses the bagel shop was destroyed and at
least three others in the area were damaged.
Iowa man pleads guilty to loan fraud over grain
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – A Clear Lake man has admitted to using
fake grain receipts as collateral for two bank loans.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 56-year-old Michael Dean Olk
pleaded guilty to loan fraud Thursday in federal court in Cedar
Rapids. A sentencing date has not been set.
The prosecutor says Olk pledged grain he didn’t own and used
fraudulent receipts from his grain elevator to obtain the loans.
Iowa State CB hospitalized after 37-14 loss to Texas
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State cornerback Leonard Johnson was
hospitalized Saturday night after helmet-to-helmet collisions with
a pair of teammates.
Johnson collided with linebacker Jake Knott and defensive
lineman Stephen Ruempolhamer while finishing off a tackle in the
fourth quarter and Iowa State down 34-7 to No. 17 Texas.
Johnson landed face down on the turf. He was flipped over,
placed on a backboard and taken away by medical personnel. He waved
to the crowd as he left, drawing cheers.
Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says Johnson had movement in his
extremities but no further information on Johnson’s conditions.
Johnson, a senior from Clearwater, Florida, was a second-team
All-Big 12 pick in 2010.
The Cyclones fell to the Longhorns 37-14 in Ames for their first
loss of the season.
David Johnson leads N. Iowa past Missouri St. 42-7
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – David Johnson ran for 114 yards and two
touchdowns, and Northern Iowa cruised to a 42-7 win Saturday over
winless Missouri State.
Johnson scored on short runs in the second and third quarters
for the Panthers (3-1, 2-0 Missouri Valley Conference). Tirrell
Rennie added 209 passing yards, including a 26-yard touchdown to
Jarred Herring.
The Bears (0-5, 0-2 MVC) got their only score on quarterback
Trevor Wooden’s 5-yard run early in the second quarter. That tied
the game 7-7, but it was all Northern Iowa after that.
Chad Owens had a 7-yard touchdown run for the Panthers’ first
score, and backup quarterback Jared Lanpher found Kevin Vereen from
11 yards out to cap the scoring late in the fourth quarter.
Wooden completed 18 of his 21 passes for 134 yards and one
interception, returned for a touchdown by Varmah Sonie with 4:53
left in the first half.
Piatkowski leads Drake to 31-14 win over Campbell
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Mike Piatkowski threw for 342 yards and
three touchdowns while setting an FCS record for completion
percentage as Drake defeated Campbell 31-14 on Saturday.
Piatkowski was 30 of 33 passing for a percentage of 90.9,
breaking the mark for QBs with at least 30 completions. Richie
Williams of Appalachian State was 40 of 45 (88.9 percent) against
Furman in 2004.
Two touchdown passes from Piatkowski to Joey Orlando lifted the
Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0 Pioneer League) to a 21-0 halftime lead.
Braden Smith was 28 of 50 for 263 yards with a touchdown and
interception for the Fighting Camels (1-3, 0-2).
Orlando caught seven passes for 67 yards. Nathan Paddock had
seven receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown for Drake.
