(LeMars) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many people show their support for breast cancer research by wearing something pink colored, or by wearing a pink ribbon. Floyd Valley Hospital is making preparations for their 11th annual “Pink Ribbon Night” scheduled for next Thursday, October 27th at the LeMars Convention Center. Kari Daale with Floyd Valley Hospital says new at this year’s event will be vendors marketing their products and services.

(LeMars) — After serving on the Northwest Area Education Agency Board of Directors for 17 years, Larry Petersen of LeMars has decided that it was time for someone else to help guide educational efforts. Northwest AEA is on of nine Iowa state agencies that provide special education support services, media and technology services, a variety of instructional services, professional development, and leadership to promote school improvement. Petersen says he enjoyed seeing students grow through education.

During Petersen’s tenure, the agency had hired three different administrators. He says another challenge was when Western Hills Area 12 merged with Area 4 to form today’s Northwest Area Education Agency.

Northwest AEA consists of 12 counties that include : Monona…Crawford…Ida…Woodbury…Plymouth…Cherokee…O’Brien…Sioux…Lyon and Osceola. Dr. Tom Bjorge, a retired dentist from LeMars has taken over for Petersen’s position on the Northwest Iowa AEA board.
LA PORTE CITY, Iowa (AP) – State workplace safety officials say Casey’s General Stores Inc. will not be fined in connection with a fire that killed an employee at a store in La Porte City.
The Iowa Division of Labor Services OSHA bureau had issued a citation fining the company $4,500 but later withdrew it. Agency officials confirmed the action Thursday but referred further questions to the Iowa OSHA administrator, who was not immediately available.
Colleen Paradine died in the July 6 fire. Authorities say the 53-year-old worker went to the store early to make doughnuts when the fire broke out. The store was closed at the time.
Firefighters found her unconscious inside. She was pronounced dead at a Waterloo hospital.
A telephone message left Thursday for a company spokesman was not immediately returned.
