Obama Visits Iowa And Criticizes Romney’s Venture Captal
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – President Barack Obama is doubling down on criticism of rival Mitt Romney’s background as a venture capitalist. The president says there may be value in such experience “but not in the White House.” Speaking yesterday at the Iowa Fair Grounds, the president called Romney’s claims that his policies have increased debt, in his words, “a cowpie of distortions.”
Two Arrested For Robbing Convenience Store
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (AP) – A convenience store clerk and another man are accused of working together to rob a Nebraska store. Police say 22-year-old Jeffrey Weber of Sioux City, Iowa, and 23-year-old Corillian Coulombe have been taken into custody for the May 9th robbery. Police say Coulombe robbed the store while Weber was working.
Man Whips Children
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (AP) – A South Sioux City man is accused of whipping two children with a power cord.
44-year-old Maximino Rivera-Nieto faces two felony counts of child abuse.
A court affidavit says a 13-year-old girl told a teacher last Friday that she couldn’t go to soccer practice because she was too sore from being whipped by her stepfather. The affidavit says an
officer sent to the girl’s home found that her 12-year-old brother had been beaten, too.
Rivera-Nieto was arrested that evening. The Dakota County sheriff’s office says he remains in custody on $25,000 bond on Thursday.
MRHD Extends Contract to Argosy
(Sioux City) — Hoping to save 325 casino jobs, the Missouri River Historical Development has offered Penn National Gaming Company an extension on the present contract between the city of Sioux City and Argosy Casino. The extension is worth $50 millon and is for two and a half years. You may recall the original contract was due to expire in July, and both sides were at a stalmate over a proposed land-base casino and the amount of revenue that would be returned to the city. Officials are hoping the move will at the very least protect the present jobs while both sides continue to negotiate a long term deal.
Sabre Expands Sioux City Operations
(Sioux City) — The Sioux City city council has approved the expansion of Sabre (Say-ber) Industries into a new business park. Economic Development director Marty Dougherty says Sabre is anxious to get started on the new facility.

He says the campus will have seven buildings and be the first business in the new Southbridge Industrial Park. The company makes cellphone and other types of towers.

He says they are skilled, well-paying jobs. Sabre’s Darwin Gamm says the company hopes to have the first production plant ready by mid-November.
Hy Vee Selects New CEO
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The president of the Iowa-based Hy-Vee grocery store chain has been named chairman and CEO.
The company says its board of directors on Thursday elected 49-year-old Randy Edeker (EE’-duh-ker) to succeed Ric Jurgens, who’s retiring on June 1st after 43 years.
Edeker is a 30-year veteran of the West Des Moines-based Hy-Vee. He started his career as a part-time worker in Chariton. He managed a store in Columbus, Nebraska before moving to the corporate office in 1995.
Edeker, who was named Hy-Vee’s president in 2009, is the company’s fourth chairman and CEO in its 82-year history.
Hy-Vee operates 235 stores in eight Midwestern states.
DNR Encourages Holiday Fishing Excursions
(Des Moines) — Besides picnics, parades and ballgames, this Memorial Day Weekend, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is encouraging people to try fishing. Martin Konrad is a fish biologist for the D-N-R and he says the fishing should be good.

Konrad says the mild winter along with the warm spring has provided anglers with ideal fishing conditions.

June 1st through the 3rd, the Iowa D-N-R is allowing for free fishing. Konrad says anyone can go fishing without a license during those three days. He says, for some, it may have been a while since the last time they had dropped a lure in the water, and the D-N-R wants people to again enjoy the experience.
