Le Mars Fire Department Battles Grass Fire
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire Department responded to a grass fire at about 10:35 p.m. last evening. That call was at 120th Lake Avenue. Fire officials were on the scene for nearly an hour.
Two People Arrested In Buena Vista County For Illegal Drug Trade
(Storm Lake) — Buena Vista County authorities have arrested two people involved in an illegal drug trade. Arrested were 22 year old Kayla Rae Wadsley of Albert City and 21 year old Kailab Hendrickson of Cherokee. Wadsley was charged with delivery of marijuana, a class D felony. She is being held on a $5000 bond. Hendrickson was arrested on a warrant for aiding and abetting delivery of marijuana, also a class D felony. He is also being held on a $5000 bond. The charges are a result of an investigation of illegal drug sales held at Alta. Buena Vista County authorities were assisted in the investigation by the Storm Lake Police Department.
Jandreau Sentencing Date Scheduled
(Le Mars) — A date of December 17th is scheduled for the sentence of Matthew Jandreau. You’ll recall earlier this week when a jury found Jandreau guilty on seven charges, including burglary, kidnapping, sexual assault, attempted burglary, operating a vehicle without permission, criminal mischief, and an OWI.
Felon With Criminal History Sentenced To 17 Years In Prison
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa man with an extensive criminal record will spend more than 17 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a gun.
Acting U.S. Attorney Sean Berry says 38-year-old Scott Slauter was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison on charges of possessing a stolen gun and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Slauter had pleaded guilty to the charges in August.
Berry says Slauter had previously been convicted of three violent felonies, and he has a history of dangerous behavior. For instance, Slauter once robbed a store and shot a clerk in the face.
Last January, Slauter was videotaped burglarizing a home in Sioux City, and he brandished a handgun during the burglary. He took jewelry and a pistol from the home.
Deer-Car Accident Results In Fatality
RED OAK, Iowa (AP) – A 26-year-old driver has been killed and her passenger injured in a rollover crash caused by a collision with a deer in southwest Iowa.
Atlantic radio station KJAN reports (https://bit.ly/QcqcF0 ) that the accident occurred around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 34, west of Red Oak.
The Iowa State Patrol says Shawna Curtis was driving east with 9-year-old Lydia Powell, both of Creston, when the SUV struck a deer that was crossing the roadway. The patrol says the deer was
flipped up, and it came through the vehicle windshield, striking Curtis.
Curtis lost control of the SUV. It ran off the highway into a ditch and rolled twice.
The patrol says Curtis was pronounced dead at the scene. The girl was flown to a hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Citation Given After Motorcycle Accident
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A 42-year-old man has been given a traffic citation for his actions in a fatal Des Moines collision.
Matthew Rodine, of Des Moines, was given a citation for failure to yield. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.
Police say Rodine was driving a sport utility vehicle on the afternoon of Nov. 10 when he attempted to turn left but collided with an oncoming motorcycle.
The motorcyclist was 38-year-old Bradford Clikeman. Authorities say Clikeman died two days later at a hospital.

Des Moines Man Charged With Faking Emergency Calls
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A 22-year-old man has been accused of faking emergency calls and jamming or otherwise disrupting the Des Moines Police Department’s radio frequency.
Kevin Grimes, of Webster Township, has been charged with 28 counts of obstructing emergency communications and eight counts of impersonating public officials.
Police say he made calls this month that forced the dispatch of officers, vehicles and equipment to the scenes of nonexistent incidents.
Police also say Grimes would leave his radio set on the police frequency without talking on it, tying up the channel.
Online records say Grimes remained in Polk County Jail on Thursday. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.
Republicans May Drop “Straw Poll”
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – In the days since Republicans lost an election many in the party thought was theirs, chatter has been bubbling about what the GOP should do to recover.
For Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, it starts with the smallest of actions: abandoning the state’s now-infamous straw poll.
Branstad and other critics contend the poll has devolved into a full-blown sideshow. They say it’s an unfair and false test that has felled far more candidates than it has propelled to the White House.
Last year, the poll effectively ended former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty’s campaign after a disappointing third-place finish.
Instead, Branstad’s allies are urging the party to substitute the straw poll with a summer fundraiser, without a vote.
Three People Charged With Election Fraud
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A citizen of Bosnia and two Canadian citizens have been charged with election fraud and fraudulent practices for allegedly registering and voting in Iowa without U.S.
citizenship.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says it issued a citation to appear in court for 28-year-old Tehvedin Murgic of Clive. The DCI says he is a citizen of Bosnia and registered and voted on November 2nd, 2010.
Murgic’s attorney did not immediately return a call.
Arrest warrants were issued for 66-year-old Laurie McCarroll and 53-year-old Leonard Blower, both of Shenandoah. The DCI says they are Canadian citizens who registered and voted in a school election
in September 2011. The DCI says it believes they are no longer living in the United States.
Their cases were not listed on Iowa online court records.
