Hy Vee Officials Visit Le Mars To Check Out Possible Site For New Store
(Le Mars) — Officials from the Hy Vee supermarket chain were in Le Mars on Wednesday afternoon. They appeared before the Le Mars Planning and Zoning Commission during a special meeting held at the city council chambers. Hy Vee officials along with Roger Athens of the Athens Real Estate office of Le Mars were requesting the zoning commission to approve a change with local zoning laws from an I-1 Light Industrial District to B-2, general business district. The Planning and Zoning commission approved the request.
There is some speculation that Hy Vee is considering building a new store for Le Mars and it may be situated at 800 Lincoln Way S.W. That address currently has the Treasure Isle Children’s Ministry, and in the past it has served as offices for Wells Enterprises. A For Sale sign has been posted in front of the property for several months. That sign now reads that the property has been sold. Hy Vee spokesperson Ruth Comber told KLEM news that it is not Hy Vee’s policy to speak about real estate transactions.
Sioux City Couple Pleads Guilty To Distribution of Methamphetamine
(Sioux City) — A Sioux City couple who conspired to distribute methamphetamine pled guilty in federal court in Sioux City. 49 year old William Sun and 55 year old Mavis Juarez were each convicted of one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and one count of distributing methamphetamine. Sun and Juarez each admitted their involvement in a conspiracy from 2011 through 2012 that distributed more than 50 grams of actual methamphetamine in Sioux City.
Lt. Governor Reynolds To Host Conference
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds will host an executive committee meeting of the National Lieutenant Governors Association over three days next week.
The meetings begin Monday, with sessions at the Des Moines Marriott in downtown Des Moines and at DuPont Pioneer in Johnston. Panels will address a number of topics, including economic
development, energy, education, health care and agriculture.
The association is made up of elected officials who are first in line of succession to the governors.
Flags To Be Lowered
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered flags under state control to be lowered in honor of an Iowa native who was killed on patrol in Afghanistan.
The flags will be flown at half-staff from 5 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Monday for Army Sgt. Joseph Richardson, who died Nov. 16.
Richardson spent most of his childhood in Algona and moved to Booneville, Ark., after the ninth grade.
Richardson’s funeral is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Algona.
Richardson is survived by his wife, Ashley Richardson, as well as his parents, two sisters, a brother and other relatives.
Democrat Steps Forward For Open House Seat
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A retired teacher and coach from New Hampton says he’s running for a House seat in northern Iowa left vacant by a resignation.
Tom Sauser, a Democrat says he will run in the special election to fill the seat in House District 52.
Rep. Brian Quirk, also a Democrat who won election to the seat in the general election Nov. 6 announced his resignation on Wednesday.
No Republican candidate has yet come forward to express interest in the seat.
The district covers all of Chickasaw and Floyd Counties as well as the eastern portion of Cerro Gordo County.
Gov. Terry Branstad will set a special election date.
