Plane Crashes Near Correctionville, Killing Two
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa (AP) – A small airplane, crashed Saturday evening in northwest Iowa killing two people and severly injuring the pilot.
Woodbury County Sheriff’s chief deputy Doug Boetger says that the plane crashed Saturday night about 2 1/2 miles south of Correctionville, near highway 31. The crash was reported about 8 p.m.
Boetger says two passengers died and the pilot was taken by ambulance to a Sioux City hospital, then later transferred to a Lincoln, Nebraska burn unit.
The passengers have been identified as Lee Schroeder, 53 of Oto, and 55 year old James Smith of Correctionville. The pilot, 70 year old Gaylen Knaack of Correctionville was listed as being in serious condition. The plane crash is being investigated by both F-A-A and NTSB officials. Further details of the crash will be released as they become available.
There was dense fog in the area, but Boetger says it’s unclear whether the weather conditions played a role in the crash.
During the response, an ambulance and law enforcement vehicle collided but Boetger says there were no injuries.

Five Fire Departments Battle Sioux Center House Fire
(Sioux Center) — Fire officials from five different communities battled a house fire Friday evening at Sioux Center. Sioux Center Fire Chief Dave Van Holland says the call came in at about 7:20 p.m. and fire fighters were on the scene for approximately four hours. Van Holland says the house suffered extensive damage with estimates that exceed $100,000.

Fire departments from Sioux Center, Ireton, Maurice, Orange City, and Hull all assisted with the fire.
Le Mars Fire Department Issues November Report
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department has issued its November report. The local fire brigade responded to a total 25 of calls. Of the calls, nine were fire calls, and with only one rescue call. Eleven times the fire department assisted with accident clean ups, or performed other investigations such as strange odors, or illegal burning. Four times the Le Mars Fire Department had requests for services. Le Mars Fire Chief Dave Schipper says the department received a new jaws of life cutter with capabilities to cut the boron steel found in new vehicles. The cost for the cutter was $5300 and was purchased with donations.
Two Orange City Men Arrested For Drug Possession
(Orange City) — The Sioux County Sheriff’s office arrested two people following an unrelated service of court documents. While at the apartment attempting to serve the documents, the deputy became aware of possible illegal drug use. Upon further investigation, 32 year old Daryl Dailey Jr. of Orange City was arrested for 3rd offense possession of a controlled substance, an aggravated misdemeanor, child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. 25 year old William Donovan also of Orange City was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor and child endangerment.
Several Hunting Accidents Occur In Iowa Over Weekend
MONROE COUNTY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa officials are trying to determine how a Mississippi man was shot and wounded by a fellow
deer hunter.
The state Department of Natural Resources says 48-year-old Clint Morgan, of Saucier, Miss., was wounded around noon Sunday.
Saucier was struck in the elbow by a slug fired by another member of his seven-member hunting party.
Saucier was taken to a Des Moines hospital for treatment.
The incident happened in Monroe County, southwest of Blakesburg.
Officials say fog was not a factor in this case. That’s different than an earlier hunting accident near Indianola where 58-year-old Miles Sagen was wounded by a fellow hunter.
Both hunting incidents remain under investigation.
NORA SPRINGS, Iowa (AP) – A 29-year-old man has been hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in a foot while hunting deer in northern Iowa.
The Iowa Natural Resources Department says Jeffrey Esser, of rural Mason City, was wounded around 4 p.m. Sunday while hunting in heavy brush southeast of Nora Springs in Floyd County.
The department says Esser’s 12-gauge shotgun accidentally fired, hitting him in the right foot. He was taken to North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
The department says that so far this year it has received a total of 11 reports of personal injury hunting-related incidents.
Police Cruiser Involved In Auto Accident
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – Investigators are trying to determine why an Iowa driver collided with a Cedar Rapids police cruiser.
Cedar Rapids police say the crash happened around 1:40 a.m. Sunday after the other driver crossed the centerline.
The westbound driver struck the marked police car.
Both drivers were injured and taken to a hospital for treatment before being released.
Police have not released the identity of the other driver.
Investigators are waiting for toxicology test results to determine if the driver was intoxicated before deciding what charges to pursue.
Prison Barber Wants To Be Compensated For Assisting Help Free Inmates
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A monthlong trial of two men seeking $100 million for their wrongful conviction in a 1977 Council Bluffs killing could end next week, but a former prison barber who is
largely responsible for their freedom wonders if she’ll be compensated for her work.
Anne Danaher of Kansas City spent years researching the case against Terry Harrington and Curtis McGhee, two Omaha teenagers who were convicted of killing a former police officer. They had spent
decades in prison when Danaher discovered investigators withheld records from defense lawyers.
This evidence led the men to be freed, and both received large settlements. Now they’re seeking more money from investigators and Council Bluffs.
Danaher says Harrington promised to share any settlement with her, but she’s received no money. She’s filed a lawsuit seeking compensation.
Police Investigate Waterloo Shooting
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – Police are investigating a shooting that killed a 22-year-old Iowa man while he was riding in a moving car.
Waterloo police say the shooting happened early Sunday morning.
Shantorio Vashawn Evans was killed when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire on the vehicle Evans was in. Evans was struck by gunfire multiple times.
Evans was taken to Allen Hospital where he died.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of Broadway Street.
