Supervisors To Meet With Veterans Affairs Director/Board Members
(Le Mars) — The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors have a light agenda before them today. The county governing board is expected to appoint John Ahlers to the Plymouth County Zoning Board to replace Darrell Schroeder. The supervisors will meet the new County Veterans Affairs Director, as well as meet with the three newest Board members to the Veteran Affairs. The county supervisors will also hear an update from County Engineer Tom Rohe.
City Council To Decide Upon Hotel-Motel Sales Tax Grant Requests
(Le Mars) — When the Le Mars City Council convenes on Tuesday for their regular meeting they will decide upon which organizations will receive grant funding from the local Hotel-Motel Sales Tax. The Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Board received twenty different funding requests amounting to nearly $57,500. The Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Board is recommending to the city council to approve just over $40,000 worth of grant requests. The requests are to help with expenses for an event that will attract visitors to Le Mars. Some of the requests would help with Ice Cream Days, the Plymouth County Fair, bike rides, art and music festivals, and upgrades with the Le Mars Convention Center.
Winds Responsible For Power Line To Snap Causing Grass Fire and Outage
(Hinton) — The Hinton Fire Department was called to respond to a grass fire on Monday afternoon. The alarm came in at about 5:00 p.m. and the grass fire was located at Hickory Avenue, just south of Lone Tree Road, located in the extreme southwest corner of Plymouth County. Fire officials were on the scene for a little more than an hour. That fire was the result of a power line that snapped due to the strong winds. Approximately five hours later, the Hinton Fire Department returned to the general area of Hickory Avenue to extinguish a fire resulting from a power line that was on fire. This time around the Hinton Fire officials were on the scene for nearly 40 minutes. Those strong winds are being blamed for a power outage that occurred yesterday afternoon leaving many rural residents around the northern edge of Sioux City, Hinton, Westfield, and Akron without power. Both MidAmerican and Northwest R-E-C crews were working on the problem and restoring power.
Two Burglaries Reported in Granville
(Orange City) — Sioux County authorities are investigating two burglary incidents that happened Monday morning at Granville. The G & H Repair located at 727 Elm Street reported a burglary at 8:50 a.m. A second burglary was reported shortly after 10:00 a.m. and this time it involved the concession stand located at Vosberg Field. With both cases, the perpetrator damaged doors to gain entry. Sioux County authorities are also investigating a stolen vehicle from a residence in rural Sheldon. A green 1995 Mercury Sable was taken without the owner’s consent.
Former Onawa Teacher Given Probation For Drug Charges
ONAWA, Iowa (AP) – A former fourth-grade teacher in western Iowa has been given a year of probation for drug possession.
44-year-old Karen Bartelson, of Blencoe, had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge. Court records say police found methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia in her purse on July 21.
District Judge Jeffrey Poulson deferred judgment on the charge. That means the charge will be removed from Bartelson’s record if she were to successfully complete probation.
Bartelson was a fourth-grade teacher at Central Elementary School in Onawa when she was arrested. She resigned before the school year started in August.
