Mid Sioux Opportunity Plans Comedy Fund Raiser
(Remsen) — Laughter will fill the Avalon Ball Room at Remsen tomorrow evening (Saturday) as Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Incorporated holds its annual Comedy Night fundraiser. This is the eleventh year for the comedy night and Melany Roling with Mid Sioux Opportunity says its a way the local agency generates revenue to provide assistance to the area’s low income families.

Roling says the event typically attracts about 300 people and raises upwards of $5000. Roling attributes the success of the event to the many sponsors that step up for the cause.

The featured comedian will be Lee Cole. Social hour begins at 6:00 p.m. with the dinner at 7:00 p.m. and the entertainment to begin at 8:00 p.m.
Construction Accident Occurs At U of I Hospital
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa has suspended a construction project at its hospital after a concrete panel fell through a window and injured a patient.
Spokesman Tom Moore said the patient received a minor injury from the broken glass Thursday afternoon and received immediate treatment.
Moore said engineers from Shive Hattery have been asked to investigate the cause of the incident, in which a pre-cast concrete panel being suspended by a crane fell. The construction involved an
addition to the Ambulatory Surgery Center at the Pomerantz Family Pavilion, near Kinnick Stadium.
Moore says patient care and staff activities have been temporarily relocated away from the side of the building where the incident happened. He says the investigation will take until next
week, and construction will not resume until concerns are resolved.
New Voting Rules Likely To Go Into Effect
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A new voting rule proposed by Secretary of State Matt Schultz will likely go into effect later this month after a legislative committee that oversees state government agency
rules failed to stop it.
The Administrative Rules Review Committee on Friday voted 5-5 on a motion to object to the rule. Democrats supported the motion while Republicans voted against it. The motion needed at least six
votes to pass. That means the rules goes into effect automatically on March 27.
The rule establishes a way to remove from voter registration lists an individual whose citizenship is questioned.
The ACLU of Iowa wanted the committee to halt implementation of the rule so lawmakers could consider the issue.
The ACLU plans to continue challenging the proposed rule in court.
Branstad To Hold Public Hearing Regarding Inmate Sentence
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gov. Terry Branstad plans to hold a public hearing to determine whether the state should commute the sentence of a convicted murderer.
Raspberry Williams is serving a life sentence for first degree murder for fatally shooting a man outside a Waterloo pool hall in 1974. The state Board of Parole last month recommended that
Branstad commute his sentence.
Branstad announced Friday he has scheduled a hearing on March 27 at the Black Hawk County Courthouse in Waterloo. The governor’s office says the hearing will seek information about how the crime impacted the victims and the community, as well as how Williams has changed in prison.
