Two People In New Jersey And One In Minnesota Wins Powerball Jackpot
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – At least three people in two states have beaten astronomical odds
to become the nation’s latest Powerball millionaires.
Sue Dooley, senior drawing manager production coordinator for the Multi-State Lottery
Association, said late Wednesday night that three tickets matched the winning numbers and
will split the lottery’s latest massive jackpot: $448 million.
The winning numbers drawn Wednesday night were: 05, 25, 30, 58, 59 and Powerball 32.
The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported early Thursday that a spokeswoman for the New
Jersey Lottery said that one of the multimillion-dollar tickets was purchased at a
supermarket in South Brunswick, N.J., and the other ticket was sold in Little Egg Harbor,
N.J.
Information on the Minnesota ticket was not available early Thursday.
Le Mars Woman Wins $40,000 From Lottery
(Des Moines) — A Plymouth County woman was just one number away from having a share of
Saturday’s $307.3 million Powerball jackpot and ended up winning a $40,000 lottery prize.
Muriel Miller of Le Mars matched four white balls and the Powerball to win a $10,000 prize.
And because she added the Power Play® to her ticket for an extra dollar, her prize
multiplied to $40,000.
Miller purchased her winning ticket at Le Mars Truck Stop, 321 Fifth Ave. SW in Le Mars.
She claimed her ticket Monday at the Iowa Lottery’s regional office in Storm Lake.
The winning numbers in the $307.3 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Saturday were:
21-24-36-42-45 and Powerball 15.
There were no jackpot winners for Saturday night’s drawing.
Le Mars Fire Department Spend Evening Training
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire Department had a busy Wednesday evening. For two hours, the
fire department conducted training exercises at 126 4th Avenue Northwest, simulating a house full of smoke and conducting search and rescues. The training session drew the attention of several neighbors as they watched the fire fighters drop hoses, extend the aerial ladder truck, and enter the house filled with smoke. After the training session had concluded, the local fire department had to investigate an illegal burning located at the 7 Linden Armel Acres Trailer Court. The call came in at 9:36 p.m. Later in the evening, at 1:20 a.m. the fire department responded to a call at 32 Second Avenue South West, where there was a report of the smell of smoke. It was determined an electronic component connected to the television had gotten too warm. Fire officials were on the scene for about 20 minutes.
Iowa State Fair Begins Today (Thursday)
(Des Moines) — The Iowa State Fair begins its eleven day run on Thursday, August 8th at Des Moines and fair manager Gary Slater is expecting another successful fair, especially if the weather stays nice.

Slater says the state fair is offering a variety of entertainment that will appeal to nearly everyone, both at the grandstand and at the various free stages. He says the Budweiser Stage has been moved to accommodate more people, and it will feature several bands from the classic rock era.

Visitors To The Iowa State Fair Can Obtain Driver’s License
ANKENY, Iowa (AP) – Transportation officials are throwing in some practical errands while
residents sample food on a stick at the Iowa State Fair: Visitors can now renew their driver’s license.
Fairgoers are encouraged to visit the state Department of Transportation booth in the
Varied Industries Building starting Thursday. Visitors will be able to renew their driver’s
license or identification card.
The self-serve kiosks at the booth will offer options already available on the
agency’s website. Users can also update the photo that appears on their new driver’s
license or ID card.
The agency launched the online renewal service through its website in mid-July.
Ethics Board Examines Political Pages On Social Media
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Board of Ethics is expected to discuss how political candidates should handle social media accounts.
The board is scheduled to meet Thursday. On the agenda is a proposed advisory opinion about whether social media accounts created for political purposes should include a disclosure known as a “paid for by” attribution.
Currently, political candidates or campaigns must include such a disclosure on advertisements, brochures and other items. The proposed opinion from the board says that Facebook and Twitter accounts created for political purposes should also include a “paid for by” attribution somewhere on the profile page.
If the account was free, the proposed opinion says the person who opens and manages the account is “paying” for the message.
The board is scheduled to discuss whether to adopt this opinion.
Board Of Regents Reviews University Presidents Salaries
AMES, Iowa (AP) – After conducting private performance reviews, the Iowa Board of Regents is expected to decide whether to give raises to the presidents of the state’s public universities and special schools.
The regents met behind closed doors Wednesday to evaluate University of Iowa President Sally Mason, Iowa State University President Steven Leath, new University of Northern Iowa President William Ruud and the board’s executive director, Bob Donley.
Also under review was Patrick Clancy, superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.
The regents’ two-day meeting will continue Thursday in Ames. The board’s agenda includes considering salaries for the university presidents, Clancy and Donley for the budget year that started July 1. Details have not been released.
Urbandale Teacher Pleads Not Guilty To Having Sex With Students
ADEL, Iowa (AP) – Pleas of not guilty have been entered for an Urbandale Middle School teacher accused of having sex with two of his students.
23-year-old Benjamin Hoffman has bonded out of Dallas County Jail. His lawyer entered the pleas for him last week.
Hoffman is charged with 11 counts of sexual abuse, one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee and two counts of providing alcohol to a minor.
West Des Moines police say Hoffman had sex with a 13-year-old student of his at Urbandale Middle School and a 14-year-old former student of Hoffman’s while he was student-teaching at Norwalk Middle School.
Hoffman was placed on leave by the school district.

Advocacy Group Wants To Privatize Iowa Juvenile Home
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – An advocacy group wants Gov. Terry Branstad to consider privatizing the Iowa Juvenile Home.
Disability Rights Iowa also wants the governor to seek new rules that would limit the home’s use of long-term isolation and physical restraints.
The federally funded group says the new rules would place the state-run home under the same guidelines that private facilities must observe on the use of isolation and restraints.
The Toledo home houses, treats and educates youths with serious behavioral problems. Disability Rights Iowa says the home has placed children as young as 13 in long-term isolation cells.
Branstad spokeswoman Janae Jenison said Wednesday that the governor believes “there needs to be a cultural change at the Iowa Juvenile Home.”

Ankeny Has New City Manager
ANKENY, Iowa (AP) – The Des Moines suburb of Ankeny has selected the Polk County administrator as its news city manager.
The City Council on Wednesday night chose David Jones, who as Polk County administrator was responsible for administration of county operations, staff and managing the budget.
The council authorized Mayor Gary Lorenz to negotiate an employment agreement with Jones.
As city manager, Jones will oversee a staff of 200 full-time employees and a $100 million budget for all operations.
Ankeny is north of Des Moines and has a population of more than 45,000.
Two People Arrested For Robbing A Church
MARENGO, Iowa (AP) – Authorities in eastern Iowa have arrested two people in connection with a robbery at a church.
The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office says 42-year-old Robby Lynn Jones, of Newton, and 38-year-old Rana Carol Frisch, also of Newton, were arrested Wednesday.
Police say Jones and Frisch entered St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo and robbed a church employee. Iowa State Patrol later stopped Jones and Frisch inside a vehicle that matched the description of the car believed to be involved in the Wednesday robbery.
Additional information about the robbery has not been released. Both Jones and Frisch have been charged with second-degree robbery. Court records do not list attorneys.
