Sac County Car Crash
EARLY, Iowa (AP) – Two men died and another was injured when the minivan they were riding in crashed near the western Iowa city of Early.
The Sac County Sheriff’s Office says the crashed happened just before 5 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 20 west of Early when the driver of a minivan lost control.
The vehicle entered the median and then started to roll.
The driver and a backseat passenger were killed. A front seat passenger was taken to a Storm Lake Hospital and was in critical condition Friday.
The sheriff’s office didn’t release the names of those involved until relatives could be notified.
Slick roads don’t appear to have been a factor in the crash.
Branstad Appoints Judge
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Governor Terry Branstad has appointed Stuart Palmer Werling as a judge in eastern Iowa’s Seventh Judicial District.
Branstad announced Friday he’d appointed Werling to fill a vacancy by Judge Gary McKenrick.
Werling, of Tipton, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and his law degree from the University of Arkansas. He has been working in private practice and as magistrate for Cedar County.
The seventh district includes Cedar, Clinton, Jackson, Muscatine and Scott counties.
PRESIDENTIAL TEACHING AWARD
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Educators from Des Moines and Shell Rock were among 102 teachers given a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The White House made the announcement Friday, giving the award to teachers from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Department of Defense Education Activity.
The recipients will be invited to Washington next year to receive their awards.
In Iowa, the winners were Josie Burg, a math teacher in Des Moines, and Mason Kuhn, a science teacher in Shell Rock.
Winners of the award receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation.
Economic Development Authority Announces Tax Credits For New Jobs
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Economic Development Authority has approved tax credits for an expansion by H.J. Heinz that could mean more than 100 jobs at the company’s plant in Muscatine.
The agency approved $825,000 in tax credits for the Pittsburg-based food maker, which has plans for a $24.5 million expansion of its plant, which produces ketchup and mustard as well as other items.
To receive the tax credits, the company must create 106 jobs. The state award also must be matched by an award by the city of Muscatine.
The state agency also awarded $75,000 in loans to ConnectFive, an Iowa City computer design firm that plans to move to a larger building in Coralville. ConnectFive must create 10 jobs.
