Hinton Bale Fire Lasts Six Hours
(Hinton) — Three fire departments, Hinton, Merrill, and Le Mars fought a round bale, tree, and field fire on Saturday that lasted more than six hours. The fire was reported shortly after 2:00 p.m. at 33113 South Ridge Road west of Hinton. Hinton’s Fire Chief Chad Beck says approximately 75 to 80 hay and corn stalk bales were destroyed in the fire. Beck says the strong winds made it that much more difficult to bring the fire under control.

Beck says the fire was an intense fire between a building and a creek bed. He says it was difficult to get access to the fire and needed a lot of water.

The Hinton Fire Chief says fire fighters were not only battling the blaze, but also falling temperatures.

Beck says the fire started as a result of the owner burning some garbage that got out of control due to the winds. There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The Hinton Fire Chief did not have an estimate of value to the destroyed round bales.
Akron Fire Department Battles Field Fire
(Akron) — At about the same time, Hinton was fighting their fire, the Akron Fire Department was also battling a field fire on Saturday. The call came in at 2:39 p.m. The Akron Fire Department responded to 31664 County Road K18 south. The Akron Fire Department also requested assistance from the Jefferson, South Dakota Fire Department to help put out the blaze. No word as to the damage, or how long fire firghters were on the scene.
Toddler Found On Highway
PERRY, Iowa (AP) – A toddler has been found sitting along a state highway in frigid central Iowa.
Authorities say someone spotted the little boy Sunday afternoon on Iowa Highway 141 west of Perry and took him to Dallas County Hospital in Perry. The National Weather Service says it was about 10 degrees at the time, with a wind chill of minus 8.
The child’s baby sitter, 31-year-old Catalina Ortiz-Ortega, of Guthrie Center, soon arrived at the hospital. She told authorities that she’d been driving in the area earlier in the day, heard a rear door of the vehicle open and close but didn’t realize the child had fallen out.
She’s charged with felony child endangerment.
Republicans Believe They Will Take Over Senate
WASHINGTON (AP) – Republicans count enough competitive races to challenge Democrats for control of the Senate in next year’s elections. But tea party challenges will make it complicated for them.
Many Republicans worry about crowded primaries in states such as Georgia, Iowa and North Carolina where tea partyers and social conservatives are fighting for the nomination. Some feel tea party victors in similar fights prevented Republicans from winning a Senate majority in 2010 and again in 2012.
Democrats hold an effective 55-45 edge in the Senate now. Republicans need a net gain of six seats to capture control. The numbers favor them. Democrats will be defending 21 of 35 seats to be decided next November. President Barack Obama’s falling popularity and the unpopularity of his health care law also could help GOP candidates.
Grinnell College Welcomes Amunition Manufacturer
GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa college known for liberal activism is welcoming an unlikely neighbor: one of the nation’s largest suppliers of high-capacity ammunition magazines and accessories for assault rifles.
With demand for gun products booming, Brownells Incorporated is building a large distribution and retail center along Interstate 80 in Grinnell.
The city is home to Grinnell College, a selective liberal arts institution known for liberal politics and a commitment to social justice.
Critics have attacked the company for profiting from accessories for military-style weapons, but the city and college are rolling out the welcome mat. It’s an example of how left-leaning politics and gun rights can coexist cheerfully, particularly when economic benefit enters the equation.
One downtown business owner says the development will be “fantastic” and bring jobs, income and visitors to Grinnell.
Des Moines Man Attacks Six People In Apartment Complex
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A Des Moines man has been accused of attacking six people inside an apartment.
Police say they found 21-year-old Demarco Moore bloody and distraught early Sunday at an apartment complex. They say he was at an apartment hanging out with friends when he began attacking the people there with him.
Police say someone allegedly said something that upset Moore. He is accused of choking one victim and using a knife and causing minor blade wounds on others.
Witnesses and victims in the apartment fought back against Moore, who received injuries to his face. All the victims refused medical treatment.
Moore was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment. He faces six counts of simple assault. Court records do not list an attorney.

Des Moines Woman Attacks Police Officers
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A woman in Des Moines has been accused of attacking police officers as she and another man tried to flee from them.
Des Moines police say Patricia Howe kicked and punched officers as she and Gabriel Boettger were being chased Saturday. Howe is accused of stealing credit cards and cash from an apartment and Boettger is accused of trying to flee with her.
Howe and Boettger were arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail. They both have been charged with interference with officials acts. Court records do not list attorneys for them.

Grinnell Police Investigate Stabbing
GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) – A Georgia man has been accused of stabbing another man multiple times in Grinnell.
The Grinnell Police Department says 28-year-old Braxton Alan Hoover was arrested following a report of a stabbing Saturday afternoon at an apartment complex. Authorities say Hoover and a 31-year-old man were fighting prior to the stabbing and it escalated in the complex’s parking lot.
The victim was stabbed multiple times in the chest and above one of his eyes. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Hoover is accused of fleeing but was taken into custody a short time later.
Hoover is charged with willful injury, assault with using or displaying a dangerous weapon and child endangerment. Court records do not list an attorney.
