Plymouth County Board Of Supervisors To Review Budget
(Le Mars) — The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors will begin the year examining the next fiscal year’s budget. The county supervisors will hear from Dick Sievers of Mid Sioux Opportunity and Tony Schroeder from the Plymouth County Fair Board as each will submit a request for funding. Plymouth County Recorder JoLynn Goodchild will report to the county governing board offering a quarterly report. The supervisors will also hear from Plymouth County Zoning Administrator, Alan Lucken, as he will present rezoning of land in Elgin Township. The supervisors will also get a construction update from Plymouth county Engineer, Tom Rohe. This afternoon, the supervisors will begin the task of reviewing the next fiscal year budget.
City Council Will Look At Bids For Stabilizing The Floyd River
(Le Mars) — When the Le Mars City Council meets today at noon, it will be Council member Clark Goodchild’s first city council meeting. On the city council’s agenda, they will focus on the submitted bids for the stabilization of the embankment of the Floyd River. The council will also review a request to establish an economic export corridor. The council will also discuss the revitalization of downtown through the community development block grant. The council is also expected to amend chapter 36 of the Fire and Rescue Department which updates the language of the ordinance.
City Water Works Crew Deal With Broken Water Main
(Le Mars) — Often times when we have the extreme and dangerously cold temperatures and windchills like we had yesterday, water lines have a tendency to freeze and break. However, the Le Mars City Water Works personnel have been fortunate not to have had many water main breaks as a result of the extreme frigid cold temperatures. Gayle Sitzmann, superintendent for the city water works, says so far, only one main had burst as a result of the cold weather.

Fire Department Called To Le Mars High School For Broken Sprinkler
(Le Mars) — Speaking of water leaks, the Le Mars Fire Department was called to the Le Mars Community High School at about 6:10 a.m. to deal with a water sprinkler that had malfunctioned, spilling water in the lobby area of the new gym. The sprinkler had apparently broke. The water has since been shut off and is expected to be repaired today. Fire officials were on the scene for a little more than an hour.
Soderberg And Anderson To Hold Legislative Forums On Saturday
(Le Mars) — On Saturday, January 11, 2014 State Representative Chuck Soderberg and State Senator Bill Anderson will be hosting legislative forums. The lawmakers will start in Hinton at the Hinton Community Center at 8:00 a.m. Their next stop will be in Le Mars beginning at 10:00 at the Habitue coffeehouse and bakery. The legislators will wrap up their forums at Akron at the Akron Public Library at 11:30 a.m. They will be discussing various issues concerning the upcoming 2014 Iowa Legislative Session. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the meetings and address any issues that are of concern.
Sioux City Police Search For Fugitive
(Sioux City) — The Sioux City Police Department is looking for 23 year old Anthony Joseph Barton who has a warrant for his arrest for a charge of going armed with intent. On December 19th, Barton is accused of assaulting 22 year old Karilynn Schroeder of Moville and struck her with her vehicle. Schroeder and Barton had been involved in a relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend. Barton is a white male who stands 6 foot 2 inches and weighs 235 pounds, with brown eyes and brown short hair. Anyone with information on Barton’s whereabouts should contact the Sioux City Police Department or the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
Cherokee Hospital To Investigate Security After Suicide
CHEROKEE, Iowa (AP) – A northwest Iowa hospital says it’s reviewing its security policy after a person committed suicide in one of its restrooms.
Officials at Cherokee Regional Medical Center say the incident happened Sunday evening. Additional information has not been released.
Cherokee Regional CEO John Comstock tells the Sioux City Journal that the person was not a patient and did not have contact with staff or other patients.
Comstock also says officials have found no fault with the hospital’s security policy, but they’re considering small changes. He didn’t say what those changes may be.
18 People Arrested After Drug Investigation
(Storm Lake) — Storm Lake Police have arrested 18 people following a drug investigation. Methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, and other illegal drugs were seized and the 18 people were arrested on Saturday and Sunday. Those arrested include : 20 year old Kevin Yang and 22 year old Doun Yang of Storm Lake, 35 year old Raul Martinez-Lozano of Storm Lake, 31 year old Macdonald Hoskins of Storm Lake, 38 year old Heidi Sippel of Galva, 32 year old Bryan Brock of Schaller, 28 year old Mindy Baughman of Fort Dodge, 32 year old Taylor Maschino of Fort Dodge, 39 year old Shane Schimmer of Ida Grove, 54 year old Dennis Franzmeier of Newell, 35 year old Casey Beckman of Odebolt, 26 year old Adam Taylor of Schaller, 23 year old Amber Apolito of Alta, 40 year old Stephen Campbell of Odebolt, 20 year old Albert Clinton Jr., 21 year old Josue Garcia of Storm Lake, 31 year old Edward Fowler of Storm Lake, and 35 year old Bouasone Sihachak of Storm Lake.
Iowa Lottery To Introduce New Scratch Off Tickets To Benefit Veterans Trust Fund
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A new Iowa Lottery scratch-off game is aimed at raising $2 million for the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund.
The game includes a chance to win a motorcycle with a tank painted by artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II. He’s best known for his Freedom Rock paintings on a boulder near Greenfield in southwest Iowa.
The game is called Ride to Riches. It carries prizes up to $1,000. Losing tickets may be entered online at www.ialottery.com for a chance to win the motorcycle through a March 27 raffle drawing.
Lottery profits have provided more than $14 million for the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund since 2008.
Department Of Public Safety To Use Facial Recognition Technology
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A top Iowa Department of Public Safety administrator says the agency is exploring how it might use facial recognition technology to fight crime.
Chari Paulson said Monday that Iowa hasn’t adopted the technology yet, but is interested in developing the capability.
Paulson was the director of the Division of Criminal Investigation for the last year. On Monday, she confirmed that she has been reassigned to be director of the DPS administrative support and technology services bureau.
In that role, she says she’ll look at adopting innovative technologies and said that developing facial recognition capabilities is one on the agenda.
She wasn’t specific, but some police agencies are using the technology to run photos of offenders through databases to track down information about them.
Privacy advocates worry about the technology.
