Le Mars Expo Opens Today
(Le Mars) — Get ready for the annual Le Mars Expo sponsored by KLEM and Powell Broadcasting. The event starts on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and continues until 8:00 p.m. at the Le Mars Convention Center. More than 70 exhibitors will be featured, utilizing both floors of the convention center. If you are wanting to improve and or remodel your home, you most likely will find it at the Le Mars Expo. Furniture, windows, appliances, countertops, real estate, building materials, and financial institutions, will all be featured at the Le Mars Expo. KLEM will kick off our 60th year of broadcasting with a Friday After 5 event. Attendees will have the chance to win a $500 quarter carat diamond pendant. The Le Mars Expo will run on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Fatal Semi-Truck Accident Occurs On Interstate 29
(Salix) — Authorities are investigating the fatal crash of a semi-truck and trailer on Interstate 29 south of Salix. Woodbury County sheriff Dave Drew says 58 year old semi driver Moss Ray Prewitt left Tyson Foods in Dakota City with a load of meat, and the truck crossed into Iowa where it left the interstate, and struck a tree and started on fire.

Drew says Prewitt of Forsyth, Missouri died in the accident and may have suffered from a medical condition.

A Tyson spokesperson confirmed Prewitt was a company employee. Earlier, four vehicles were struck by someone in the Tyson Parking Lot in Dakota City. Dakota County sheriff Chris Kleinberg says the incidents may not be related, and there is no surveillance video to determine who hit those vehicles. I-29 southbound lanes near Salix were closed into the afternoon and the accident remains under investigation.
Soderberg And Anderson To Hold Legislative Forum At Library
(Le Mars) — Legislators Chuck Soderberg and Bill Anderson have scheduled a legislative forum to be held on Saturday at the Le Mars Public Library. The Republican lawmakers will discuss various issues concerning the 2014 Legislative Session. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the meeting and address any issues of concern. That legislative forum is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
Power Of The Purse Seminar Scheduled For Saturday March 15
(Le Mars) — The Power of the Purse is a seminar and fashion show for women scheduled for 8:30 a.m. next Saturday, March 15th at the Le Mars Convention Center. The program is sponsored by the Good Samaritan Society of Le Mars with the proceeds to benefit the Good Samaritan Society. Pat McGill of Spirit Lake, is a former college professor and is scheduled as the guest speaker. She explains how she became interested in public speaking.

Gaming Consultant Says Iowa Has Enough Casinos
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A consultant says Iowa should focus on reinvesting in existing casinos rather than license any new operations.
Rich Baldwin is managing director of Union Gaming Analytics, and he told the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on Thursday that, “We do not believe there are any underserved counties in the state of Iowa.”
Representatives from Marquette Advisors echoed concerns that new casinos would simply take business from existing casinos.
The consultants were hired by the state regulators to conduct independent evaluations of Iowa’s gambling markets.
Backers of two proposed casinos disagreed with the consultants, telling the commission the evaluations were based on incomplete data. The officials from Cedar Rapids and Jefferson have said their projects would create hundreds of jobs and spur growth.

Lawmakers Telling Greyhound Industry They Want To End Dog Racing
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Legislative leaders are telling the greyhound racing industry and casinos that want to end dog racing to work out their differences soon.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, a Council Bluffs Democrat, says he’d like to see a deal that provides a “soft landing” for the greyhound industry that support the state’s two remaining dog tracks at casinos in Council Bluffs and Dubuque. Republican House Speaker Kraig Paulsen agrees.
The casinos, which provided $10 million last year to subsidize dog racing want the tracks to close.
The greyhound industry says it employs 1,200 workers in Iowa and hopes to keep a track operating somewhere in Iowa.
A bill that has passed the committee level requires the casinos to pay the dog industry $70 million over six years to shut down racing.
