Supervisors Will Not Meet This Week
(Le Mars) — The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors will not be meeting this week. They will resume their regular weekly meetings at the county courthouse next week.
School Board To Discuss Textbooks, Leases, And Fees
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Community Board of Education is scheduled to convene later this evening, and the school board will hear a report from Assistant Superintendent Steve Webner discuss the elementary social studies textbook selection. The school board will also discuss the LCSD Foundation Chamber Coffee scheduled for Wednesday morning at the Education Service Center in honor of the recipients and donors of the 2014 Le Mars Community School District Foundation. The school board will also discuss lease agreements with Northwest Area Education Agency, and Buena Vista University. The school board is also scheduled to discuss fees for the next school year.
Wasmer Post #241 Hold Memorial Day Services
(Le Mars) — 28 new flags were dedicated during yesterday’s Memorial Day program held at the Plymouth County Courthouse, bringing the total number of honored veterans who have passed away to 1201. The Wasmer Post #241 American Legion held the ceremony, with Legionaire Pat Murphy reading all 1201 names. Several hundred people had gathered on the courthouse lawn for the annual event to honor and remember those who served this country either in the National Guard, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force, or Army.
Police Investigate Attempted Abduction
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Authorities in Sioux City are investigating an attempted abduction near a park.
A 12-year-old boy told police he was walking home from Highview Park shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday when a man in a black ski mask tried to lure him into a van.
The boy reported that the van was white with a blue air freshener inside. Police are still searching for the suspect.
Sioux City Police Sgt. Kevin Heineman is urging parents to remind their children not to talk to strangers and to report any suspicious activity to an adult.

Sioux Rapids Man Charged For Sexual Assault
(Storm Lake) — Storm Lake Police on Sunday have arrested a man sought for four days for allegedly sexually assaulting a Storm Lake woman. The Storm Lake Police is reporting the arrest of 18 year old Edgar Saul Morengo-Leiga of Sioux Rapids on a charge of third-degree sexual assault. Police had asked the public for help in finding Moreno-Leiga and he turned himself in at the police station Sunday evening. He was booked into Buena Vista County jail on a $10,000 bond. Officers responded to a residence at about 11:00 p.m. Wednesday where the victim alleged that Moreno-Leiga sexually assaulted her.
Fired Red Oak Principal Wants Open Public Discussion On Dismissal
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – An embattled Iowa high school principal says he wants school board discussions of his firing to be aired in public.
Red Oak High School Principal Jedd Sherman says he has nothing to hide, and he has requested that the Red Oak School Board conduct its talks about him in an open meeting.
Sherman says the board’s efforts to fire him are retaliation for him reporting two cases of student bullying. Sherman says top school officials were also unhappy after he requested that an already-planned bathroom remodeling project be done in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
School board member have declined to discuss their reasons for trying to fire Sherman, but have refused his request to conduct their discussion in public.

Failure To Wash Dishes Results In Woman Being Ran Over By Car
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A Des Moines woman hospitalized after being hit by a car in her driveway said she was targeted by a man angry over her request for him to help wash dishes.
The woman told investigating officers she was run over after she reminded the man to wash the dishes.
A witness told police he saw the man leave the house and the victim followed after him, asking why he was upset. The witness said the man got in his car and accelerated toward the woman, hitting her and causing her to fly into the air.
The witness said the man did not stop to check on the well-being of the woman.
An arrest warrant has been issued for the man.

Man Fishing Falls Into Lake And Drowns
VENTURA, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say no foul play is suspected in the death of a Mason City man found in Clear Lake.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office says it responded around 3 a.m. Saturday to a missing person report near Farmers Beach in rural Ventura.
Authorities found the body of 26-year-old David Jon Caspers in Clear Lake. He had previously been fishing with friends, but additional information was not released.
The incident remains under investigation, but authorities do not suspect foul play.

Inmate Escapes From Work Detail
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Officials say an Iowa inmate has escaped from a work release facility.
The state Department of Corrections says 24-year-old Jessie Hickman Smith was placed on escape status Monday after failing to return to the Fort Des Moines Work Release Facility from employment.
Smith was transferred to work release in March. Department spokesman Fred Scaletta says Smith was serving a 10-year sentence for second-degree robbery. He began his sentence in May 2007.
The public is encouraged to contact the Des Moines Police Department or the Polk County Sheriff’s Department if they have information about Smith’s whereabouts.
Deck Collapses Injuring Seven People
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say several people received minor injuries when a backyard deck partially collapsed in Des Moines.
About seven people were on the deck went it partially collapsed Monday afternoon at a home on the city’s west side.
Police say several people received scrapes. A 2-year-old child was taken to a local hospital to be checked out.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse.

AAA Calls Time Between Memorial Day And Labor Day As 100 Days Of Deadly Teen Driving
(Des Moines) — Iowa parents and teen drivers are being reminded — and warned — about the typical increase in fatal crashes involving teens during the coming few months. Rose White, spokeswoman for Triple-A-Iowa, says this holiday weekend marks the start of what her organization refers to as the 100 deadliest days of summer for new drivers.

The Iowa D-O-T reports a total of 22 Iowa teens were killed in crashes last year statewide and ten of those deaths happened between the two holidays — so almost half. A combination of factors can get the blame, she says, including the inexperience of a teen driver as well as all of the distractions of taking a drive during the summertime.
