Two Vehicle Accident Causes Multiple Injuries
(Oyens) — A two-vehicle accident occurred Friday evening at about 6:00 p.m. at the intersection of County Roads C-16 and K-64, about three miles north of Oyens. Multiple injuries were reported from the accident. The Oyens Fire and Rescue and Remsen Fire and Rescue Departments responded to the scene and had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate some of the victims. According to a traffic accident report by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s office, a 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by 17 year old Jasmine King of North Sioux City, South Dakota was eastbound on C-16 approaching the intersection. King was required to stop, but according to witness accounts, she failed to do so. King went into the path of a southbound 2011 Hyundi driven by Mark Scallon, 27, of Orange City. Scallon’s vehicle struck King’s vehicle in the driver’s door. King’s vehicle had three passengers; 17 year old Shelby LaFleur of Akron, as well as two minor children ages five and seven from Sioux City. The Scallon vehicle had one passenger, Jenon Scallon, age 26, of Orange City. Both drivers and all of the passengers were transported to Floyd Valley Hospital. The accident is being investigated by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s office. Responding to the accident were the Remsen Fire and Rescue Department, Oyens Fire and Rescue, Remsen Ambulance, Oyens Ambulance, Le Mars Ambulance, Remsen Police, Iowa Highway Patrol, and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s office.
Four Le Mars Men Arrested For Burglary And Drug Possession
(Le Mars) — Four suspects were arrested on Thursday morning following a report of a burglary that occurred at the 3400 block of 120th Street. It was determined the burglary occurred sometime between the evening hours of Wednesday night and early morning Thursday. The owner reported that tools has been stolen from the machine shed. During the investigation conducted by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s department, information was gathered that lead deputies to a nearby residence, also located in the 3400 block of 120th Street, which subsequently lead to the arrests and the recovery of the stolen tools. All four suspects were transported to the Plymouth County jail. Arrested were Jacob G. L. Garrett, age 18, of Le Mars who was charged with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia. 18 year old Kaz M. Golladay of Le Mars was arrested for burglary in the third degree, a class D felony. Golladay was also charged with Possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The third individual arrested was 18 year old Dylan M. Hawkins of Le Mars. Hawkins was charged with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony, and possession of a controlled substance. Also arrested was 18 year old Andrew W. Rasmussen of Le Mars with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony.
Le Mars Police Department Advises Residents To Be Aware During Summer Months
(Le Mars) — School’s out and the Le Mars Police Department wants to remind Le Mars residents to be alert during these summer months. Le Mars Police Chief Stuart Dekkenga says people tend to forget that young children are out and about.

Relay For Life Raises $15,000 For Cancer Research
(Le Mars) — The American Cancer Society’s Plymouth County’s Relay For Life was held last evening and organizers estimate a total of $15,000 was raised for cancer research. Nearly 240 people participated in the annual event walking around the track at the Le Mars Community Football Stadium.
Des Moines Authorities Recover Body From River
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have recovered a body from the Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines.
The Des Moines Fire Department says the body was recovered Friday afternoon after a woman spotted it south of the Center Street Dam. A water emergency team used a boat to recover the body.
Des Moines police later identified the body as 24-year old Sachin Rayappa, of Des Moines. He had been reported missing Tuesday.
An autopsy will be performed, but police say the death doesn’t appear suspicious.
Iowa State University Sweeney Hall Catches On Fire
AMES, Iowa (AP) – A building on the Iowa State University campus was damaged in an early morning fire.
The university says in a news release Friday that the fire at Sweeney Hall started in a mechanical area atop the building.
Ames firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze, but the building received extensive smoke and water damage. No one was injured.
The cause of the fire is still being determined.
Sweeney Hall is home to ISU’s chemical and biological engineering department. Crews plan to spend the weekend removing water and cleaning the building, but its west wing will be closed at least until Monday.
Some classes will be moved to other buildings.
Branstad Signs Several Bills Into Law
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has signed a bill into law that will end greyhound dog racing in Council Bluffs by 2016.
Branstad’s office said the governor signed the bill Friday along with more than a dozen other bills.
The measure will end greyhound racing in Council Bluffs but allow dog owners to continue operating a track in Dubuque. It requires casinos that have long-subsidized the dog racing tracks to pay $72 million. That will pay for a retirement fund for dog owners and breeders and help the Iowa Greyhound Association negotiate a lease for the Dubuque track.
Branstad signed five bills publicly Friday, including legislation that legalizes the use of cannabis oil to treat severe epilepsy.
