Hinton Fire Department Responds To Car Fire
(Hinton) — The Hinton Fire Department responded to a car fire Thursday evening. Shortly before 8:00 p.m. the Hinton Fire Department was notified of a car that had caught on fire while traveling on Highway 75. The car was heading northbound at the time of the fire. Fire officials were on the scene for approximately forty minutes.
Grassley Says Senate Will Focus On One Issue During Short Session
(Des Moines) — Congress will soon be returning to Washington D.C. for what will be a short session before they recess again. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa told KLEM news today, he expects the Senate to focus its attention on only one item.

Grassley says Democratic Senator and Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has scheduled on the calendar for an early dismissal. Grassley believes the Democrats are worried about the approaching election, and feel they need additional time to campaign.

Storm Lake Woman Charged With Child Endangerment
STORM LAKE, Iowa (AP) – Storm Lake police have arrested a woman who they say played a game with her children that deprived them of oxygen.
31-year-old Jennifer Cordova was charged with two counts of child endangerment on Thursday. Police say she played a “pass out game” with her 13- and 7-year-old sons. They say she pushed on the 13-year-old’s chest until he passed out. The 7-year-old wasn’t injured.
It’s unclear if the older child was hospitalized.
Cordova was released from the Buena Vista County Jail on $2,000 bond. Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney.

Heroin Overdoses Increase In Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa officials say the number of fatal heroin overdoses more than doubled in the state last year.
The Iowa Department of Public Health says 20 people died in 2013. That’s up from eight in 2012. There were about one to four heroin deaths a year prior to 2008.
An Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement director says Iowa’s heroin problem seems to be worse in the eastern part of the state. He says those areas are closer to Chicago suppliers.
The department didn’t say who the victims were or where they died.
An addiction-treatment specialist says the national increase in heroin use correlates to a rise in the abuse of prescription painkillers.

Woman Files Lawsuit Over Isolation In Juvenile Home
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa woman has filed a lawsuit claiming she was kept in an isolation cell at a state juvenile home for a total of 280 days.
Court records show 20-year-old Jessica Turner of Okoboji filed the lawsuit in August. It names the state of Iowa, as well as officials at the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Iowa Juvenile Home.
Turner claims the state violated her constitutional rights and violated laws and regulations on the use of isolation at the Toledo facility. She says she spend “numerous consecutive weeks” in isolation.
Turner is seeking unspecified damages. The home closed in January after questions were raised about the treatment of teenagers. Records show the state has not yet filed a response to the lawsuit.
Attorneys Rest Case In Cop Killing Trial
CLARION, Iowa (AP) – Prosecutors and defense attorneys have rested their cases in the trial of a man charged with killing a Rockwell City police officer last year.
Both sides rested their cases Thursday in the trial of 33-year-old Corey Trott. Closing arguments will be delivered Friday morning.
Trott is charged with first-degree murder in the September 2013 death of 37-year-old officer Jamie Buenting. He has pleaded not guilty.
Authorities say Trott shot Buenting during a standoff at Trott’s house. Officers were trying to arrest Trott after an alleged assault on his mother. He later surrendered.
Prosecutors rested their case in the morning. The defense did not call any witnesses, and Trott did not testify.
Iowa Ranks 12th For Adult Obesity
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A new report says Iowa had the nation’s 12th highest adult obesity rate in 2013.
The report released Thursday by the Trust for America’s Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that 31.3 percent of adults in Iowa were obese last year.
Nine of the 10 states with the highest obesity rates are in the South.
Mississippi and West Virginia tied for the top rate, at 35.1 percent. Colorado’s 21.3 percent was the nation’s lowest.
Iowa’s obesity rate was higher than all of its neighboring states.
