DENISON — In a wild exchange of scores in the final 1:41 of the game, Denison-Schleswig fired the final volley and pulled out a 38-34 win over the Le Mars Bulldogs Friday in a Class 3A, District 1 football match-up in Denison. The Monarchs converted a fourth-and-long pass play to set up a ten yard touchdown pass from Mitch Kinsey to Tyler Reynolds with 12 seconds to play, lifting Denison-Schleswig to victory. The touchdown capped a seven play, 61 yard drive in the final 64 seconds and came after the Bulldogs seemingly had scored the deciding touchdown with 1:09 to play on a 57-yard TD-pass from Koster Buss to Tyler Paulson. Paulson, however, was called for excessive celebration when he pumped his fist in the air while crossing the goal line. The penalty was assessed on the kick-off, setting up the Monarchs’ final drive from midfield. Denison-Schleswig snapped a 28-all tie with a 22-yard Christian Cortez field goal with 1:41 to play that at the time looked like the deciding points before both teams struck for their final scores in an emotionally charged finish. Le Mars led 20-7 late in the first half, scoring on a pair of Beau Ohm touchdown runs sandwiched around a 20-yard TD-pass from Buss to Tyler Borchers. The Monarchs scored with 34 seconds to play in the half on a quarterback sneak by Kinsey to trim the Bulldogs lead to 20-14 at the break. Denison-Schleswig took their first lead late in the third quarter on Jade Pauley’s 22 yard run for a 21-20 advantage. Le Mars answered with a 15-play, 73-yard drive that ate up 5:26 of the second half clock and was capped by Beau Ohm’s third score of the night, a three-yard TD scamper off left tackle. A two-point conversion pass from Tyler Paulson to Tyler Borchers gave Le Mars a 28-21 lead with 9:47 left in the game. The Monarchs responded 68 seconds later, tying the game on a 61-yard pass play from Kinsey to Reynolds with 8:39 to play. The two teams combined for over 800 yards of offense and 72 points. Le Mars falls to 2-and-3 for the season and 1-and-1 in district play. The Dogs host Spencer Friday at Jim Lorenzen Field in a ‘Tackle Cancer’ night promotion to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.
LE MARS — Lane Nichols ran for three touchdowns and Ethan Schultzen connected with Nic Scheelhaase on a pair of touchdown passes to lead Woodbury Central to a 38-0 victory over Gehlen Catholic Friday night in a Class A, District 2 match-up at Jim Lorenzen Field. The Wildcats rolled up 435 yards of offense while holding the Jays to a mere 57 yards. Gehlen had a minus 1 rushing stat for the night with the Jays leading rushier, Solomon Freking, totaling a minus 12. Robbie Gunter led the Jays running attack with 12 yards on one carry. Woodbury Central got 179 yards from Luke Klingensmith while Nichols totaled 136 yards on the ground and scored on runs of nine, 13 and 22 yards. Scheelhaase had two pass catches for the Wildcats, both going for touchdowns. Schultzen was 3-for-6 passing, throwing scoring passes of 21 and 48 yards. Alex Kellen finished 8-of-16 passing for 58 yards for Gehlen Catholic. The Jays fall to 0-and-5 for the season and 0-and-3 in district play. Gehlen travels to Hawarden next Friday to play West Sioux in a game that will be carried on KLEM.
