Two People Charged With Drug Possession Following Traffic Stop
(Le Mars) — A traffic stop made by a Plymouth County Reserve deputy resulted in a drug arrest of two people. At about 1:00 a.m. Monday morning, a vehicle on East Loop Road in rural Plymouth County was stopped. During the investigation, the driver of the vehicle, 22 year old Joseph Kisner of Sioux City admitted to having illegal drugs in his pants pocket, as well as in the vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle, 19 year old Cassandra Rowland of Sioux City also admitted to having illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. Upon a search, a bag of marijuana was found on Kisner, and a search of the vehicle resulted in finding additional marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Kisner was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, a serious misdemeanor. Rowland was arrested and charged with possession with the intent to deliver, a Class D felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. Both were transported to the Plymouth County Jail.
Le Mars Woman Sentenced To Five Years Following Hit-And-Run Accident
(Sioux City) — It’s five years in prison for a Le Mars Woman charged ina fatal hit and run accident is Sioux City dating back to September of 2012. 44 year old Victoria Ernst-Moreno received her sentence on Monday for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death. In a plea agreement, a charge of vehicular homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol was dropped. Ernst-Moreno was charged in March of this year for the 2012 accident that claimed the life of 22 year old Lance Knudsen. Knudsen’s body was found lying on Floyd Boulevard near 12th Street around 1:15 a.m. on September 22 of 2012 after being struck by Ernst-Moreno’s S-U-V. He later died from his injuries.
Authorities Have Now Identified Teens That Died From Deadly Accident
(Storm Lake) — A fatal traffic accident occurred in Buena Vista County, Monday morning claiming the lives of two teen agers. Buena Vista County authorities responded to the accident that happened a half mile east of County Road M-50 on 570th Street, northeast of Storm Lake. The accident involved two vehicles, a pick-up truck driven by 43 year old Kent Erickson of Albert City, and a passenger car driven by a 17 year old male from Sioux Rapids. The 17 year old male was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Caleb Smith. Also killed in that accident was 16 year old Lexi Rysdstrom of Marathon. Also injured in the passenger car was a 15 year old female from rural Storm Lake who suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by helicopter from the scene to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Rose Joens, age 19, of Schaller was also a passenger in the car and suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake by ambulance. Erickson suffered minor injuries in the mishap. 49 year old Trent Jackson of rural Alta was trapped in the vehicle and had to be ex-tri-cated by rescue personnel from Newell and Storm Lake Fire Departments having suffered incapacitating injuries. Assisting at the scene were the Iowa State Patrol, the Newell Fire Department, the Storm Lake Fire Department, Newell Ambulance, Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Paramedics, and the Buena Vista County Medical Examiner’s office. The investigation is continuing by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s office and Iowa State Patrol.
City Water Officials Say Water Flow May Be Reduced On Wednesday
(Le Mars) — City water officials want to remind Le Mars residents that I-M-L Containers located at 1620 24th Street Southwest will be conducting its annual fire system flow test on Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. This fire flow will release up to 3500 gallons per minute. In turn, this will lower the flows in most of the immediate area and will reverse flow in many areas of town because of the large flow. City Water Superintendent, Gayle Sitzmann says water officials will be monitoring and compensate to limit the changes as they occur.
Soux City Officials Hope For “Home Base Iowa” Designation By Hiring Veterans
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Leaders in Sioux City are encouraging businesses to hire veterans so it can become the first city to gain a Home Base Iowa designation.
Home Base Iowa is a new private-public partnership seeking to make Iowa a job destination for veterans who’ll be relieved from active duty over the next several years. According to the federal defense department, it’s the largest drawdown of active duty forces since World War II.
Local officials asked employers to sign up for the initiative, making an appeal Monday at the Chamber’s annual dinner.
At least 10 percent of businesses in a city, county or region must sign up to get the Home Base Iowa designation. Sioux City’s economic development director says the minimum number is about 175 for Sioux City.

Crop Report Shows Crops Behind In Normal Maturity
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Corn and soybean crops are in good condition but the challenge for farmers is getting the crops harvested before the weather turns cold.
Late planting caused the crops to mature later than normal. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in its weekly update Monday that 60 percent of the corn crop is mature, well behind the five-year average of 70 percent. Soybeans are two percentage points behind the average.
Just 2 percent of the Iowa corn crop is harvested far less than the 15 percent average. About 3 percent of soybeans are out of the fields, behind the 17 percent average.
Nationally, 12 percent of corn is out of the fields half the average at this point in time. Ten percent of soybeans are harvested, seven points behind the average.
North Carolina Man Pleads Not Guilty To Stabbing Incident
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A 24-year-old North Carolina man has pleaded not guilty to stabbing four other men outside a downtown Sioux City strip club.
Carnie Brayboy, of Rowland, North Carolina, entered his written plea Monday in Woodbury County District Court to four counts of willful injury.
A trial date has not yet been set.
Brayboy is accused of stabbing the four men during a fight around 1:20 a.m. Sept. 13 outside Teasers’ Gentlemen Club.
Hatch Pulls Out Of All Television Advertising
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jack Hatch isn’t running any television ads in Iowa, but an aide insists that isn’t a sign the campaign is out of money.
After Gov. Terry Branstad’s campaign issued a news release Tuesday about ads, Hatch campaign manager Grant Woodard acknowledged the campaign wasn’t running any TV ads and hadn’t reserved any future airtime. The campaign ran television ads from Sept. 9 through Sept. 29.
Woodard said the campaign will air ads before Election Day, adding the campaign is just trying to be “judicious” with its resources.
Branstad is airing ads statewide.
A Des Moines Register poll released Monday shows 48 percent of likely voters supporting Branstad and 34 percent backing Hatch. The poll of 546 likely voters had a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.
Attorney General Says Templeton Rye Lawsuit May Proceed
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa attorney general’s office says a lawsuit alleging whiskey maker Templeton Rye misled consumers can proceed.
A state law requires the Iowa attorney general’s office to evaluate the lawsuit and determine if the claims have validity to move forward in court.
The proposed class-action lawsuit was filed in Illinois by a Chicago law firm on behalf of consumers in the country who have purchased a bottle of Templeton Rye.
It claims the company broke consumer protection laws and misled drinkers about the whiskey’s Iowa origins. Templeton Rye is distilled in Indiana, which wasn’t mentioned on bottles. The company announced in August that it will change its labels.
Templeton Rye co-owner Keith Kerkhoff says the company’s lawyers will respond in court.
