Le Mars Police Department shares e-bike, e-scooter safety tips
With the increase in use of e-bikes and e-scooters in the area, so too has complaints and concerns surrounding riders failing to stop at stop signs and narrowly avoiding or even causing collisions with vehicles. Le Mars Interim Police Chief Justin Daale told KLEM that riders still have to follow the laws of the road, even if they’re not in a motor vehicle.
The department posted on Facebook last week that they’ve received complaints of riders, particularly younger teenagers and children, not following traffic laws. Daale says the department provides safety tips to riders if they’re caught violating basic traffic laws.
Daale encourages parents to have a conversation on rider safety with their kids before using an e-bike or e-scooter.
Daale says the city and department is potentially “thinking” about an ordinance relating to the operation of e-bikes and e-scooters.
In the Facebook post, the department encourages residents to “help keep our streets safe for riders, pedestrians, and motorists.”

Forecaster: Iowa’s wicked heat wave may last through July 4th
Ninety-six of Iowa’s 99 counties are under an Extreme Heat Warning that will run through 9 o’clock tonight. The remaining three counties, Lyon, Osceola and Dickinson in far northwest Iowa, are under a Heat Advisory. Jim Lee, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, says conditions are brutal throughout the state.
Lee anticipates July will begin much like June is wrapping up — steamy.
Lee says some rainfall is possible, which could help to relieve the oppressive heat a little.
Forecasters remind Iowans to stay hydrated, take breaks if working in the heat, and to never leave pets or children in cars even for a few minutes.
