KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Royals are one victory away from advancing to their first World Series in 29 years. The Royals nipped Baltimore 2-1 to take a 3-0 lead in their American League Championship Series at Kauffman Stadium. Billy Butler’s sixth inning sacrifice fly broke a 1-1 tie for the Royals, who didn’t allow a hit after the third inning. Game 4 is this afternoon.
SAN FRANCISCO -The San Francisco Giants take a 2-1 lead over St. Louis into tonight’s Game 4 of the NL Championship Series following yesterday’s 5-4 victory in 10 innings. Ryan Vogelsong goes for the Giants tonight (8:07 p.m. Eastern time) against Shelby Miller of the Cards.

KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Royals are going to the World Series after yesterday’s 2-1 victory gave them the American League pennant and a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. The Royals allowed just two runs and seven hits in winning the last two games of the series. Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain was named the MVP of the series after batting .533 with five runs scored and several outstanding defensive plays.
SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants can wrap up the National League pennant when they host the St. Louis Cardinals later today. Buster Posey had three RBIs and Yusmeiro Petit (yoos-MEHR’-oh peh-TEE’) pitched three shutout innings of relief as the Giants rallied to beat the Redbirds 6-4 last night. Kolten Wong’s solo homer put the Cardinals ahead 4-1 in the third before the Giants stormed back.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Shane Vereen caught two of Tom Brady’s three touchdown passes and had 114 total yards as the New England Patriots beat the New York Jets 27-25 to improve to 5-2. Brady was 20 of 37 for 261 yards, including a scoring pass that put the Pats ahead 27-19 midway through the fourth quarter. The outcome hung in the balance until the Patriots blocked a 58-yard field goal attempt on the final play.

SAN FRANCISCO – Travis Ishikawa’s (ee’-shee-KAH’-wahz) three-run, walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the San Francisco Giants a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and their third National League pennant in five seasons. Every Giants run came via the longball as Joe Panik hit a two-run shot and pinch-hitter Michael Morse supplied the series-winning blast. The Giants have four days to prepare for Game 1 of the World Series Tuesday at Kansas City.
SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner was named the MVP of the National League Championship Series. Bumgarner allowed three runs in eight innings during the series clincher last night after tossing shutout ball in Game 1. He was 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA in the NLCS.

(LE MARS) — Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley blocked an extra point kick following Le Mars final touchdown with 10:54 to play and held on for a 28-27 victory in a Class 3A District 1 match-up at Jim Lorenzen Field Friday night. The loss deals a blow to the Bulldogs’ playoff hopes as they fall to 3-and-5 for the season and 2-and-3 in the district race. Le Mars will need to beat #3-Bishop Heelan in their finale next Friday in Sioux City to keep their post season hopes alive. Friday night’s game featured an intense battle that went back-and-forth before the Nighthawks broke a 21-all tie with a three-yard scoring pass from Brady Post to Kobe Lutjens late in the third quarter. The Bulldogs scored on their next possession on a 15 yard Koster Buss to Tyler Borchers pass but the blocked point after kept Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in front to stay. Post threw four touchdown passes to lead the Nighthawks to a victory that may have a secured a playoff spot. Justin Schmidt was on the receiving end of two of those scoring tosses. Tyler Paulson caught a 15 yard TD-pass from Buss to open the scoring midway through the first quarter to give Le Mars an early lead. BH/RV took a 13-7 lead with a pair of touchdowns before Beau Ohm scored on a two yard run to put Le Mars back in front 14-13 with 6:42 to play in the first half. Post threw his third TD pass of the first half to send the Nighthawks to the locker room with a 21-14 lead. Le Mars knotted the score at 21-all on a nine yard Beau Ohm touchdown run with 8:24 to play in the third quarter.
(ALTA) — Alta-Aurelia took advantage of five turnovers to beat Gehlen Catholic 35-0 Friday night in a Class A District 2 match-up in Alta, keeping the Jays winless at 0-and-8 and 0-and-6 in district play. Mitchell Fritz scored a pair of first half touchdowns for the Warriors on a two yard run and a 53-yard pass play and Connor Napierala scooped up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a score to lead Alta-Aurelia to a 28-0 halftime lead. Bryce Radke and Jesse Boehmer scored the other Warrior touchdowns. Radke caught a screen pass and turned it into a nine yard touchdown play and Boehmer scored on a two yard run. The Jays struggled offensively behind sophomore Cooper Davis, who was making his first career start at quarterback for Gehlen. The Jays were held to 139 yards of offense and eight first downs. Davis finished 9-of-17 passing for 88 yards and one interception. He also had one of the Jays’ four fumbles. Solomon Freking and Robbie Gunter hauled in three passes each for Gehlen. The Jays close out the 2014 season next Friday against Lawton-Bronson at Jim Lorenzen Field.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Will Likely returned an interception 45 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown, and Maryland rallied from an early 14-point deficit to beat Iowa 38-31 Saturday for its first Big Ten home victory.
The Terrapins (5-2, 2-1) scored 24 straight points after falling behind by two touchdowns with 8 1/2 minutes elapsed. It was 24-21 before Likely picked off a Jake Rudock pass and sprinted untouched into the end zone with 12:29 left.
Iowa (5-2, 2-1) committed three turnovers, sputtered offensively after its quick start and had its three-game winning streak end. Rudock went 32 for 56 for 317 yards and two touchdowns.
AUSTIN, Texas – Nick Rose kicked a 21-yard field goal with 3 seconds left, sending Texas to a wild 48-45 victory over Iowa State, snapping a two-game losing streak in what had been the worst start for the Longhorns in nearly 60 years.
Iowa State had tied it 45-45 with 28 seconds left on E.J. Bibbs’ second touchdown catch. Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoopes then threw two long passes to Jaxon Shipley and John Harris to set up Rose’s winning kick.
Sam Richardson passed for 345 yards for Iowa State (2-5, 0-4). The teams combined for more than 1,000 yards total offense.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -Melvin Taveras intercepted a Brion Carnes pass at his 3-yard line to seal a 31-28 South Dakota State win over U-N-I.
Kicker Justin Syrovatka made a 44-yard field goal with 1:47 left to play to help the Jackrabbits notch their first FCS win at UNI.
SDSU (5-2, 2-1 MVFC) led 28-14 with 8:58 to play after scoring 21 straight points. But UNI (3-4, 1-2) got a 2-yard TD run by David Johnson and minutes later a 58-yard interception return for a score by Ray Mitchell with 3:29 left to tie it 28-28.
Johnson, who ran for 78 yards for UNI, scored on a 50-yard run and Barkley Hill caught a 2-yard TD pass to give the Panthers a 14-7 halftime lead.
UNI’s Sawyer Kollmorgen and Brion Carnes were 20-for-35 for 178 yards. But they were intercepted three times.
