Soderberg Says Legislature Probably Will Not End On Time
(Le Mars) — Next Friday, May 1st, is the scheduled deadline of the 110 day legislative session, but Le Mars’ state representative Chuck Soderberg doesn’t believe lawmakers will be finished with their work prior to the deadline.

New Law Ensures Adult Children To Visit Ill Parents
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A new Iowa law aims to ensure that adult children can see their sick parents – granting them visitation rights unless the person’s guardian goes to court to stop them.
Governor Terry Branstad signed the bill Friday. The law gives an adult with a legal guardian – someone who cannot manage their own affairs – the right to receive visits from family members and others they have previously expressed interest in seeing.
Senator Rob Hogg said he started working on the issue after hearing from a constituent having difficulty visiting her brother.
Big Brothers-Big Sisters Of Siouxland Awarded Helmet Of Hope Grant
(Sioux City) — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland is a recipient of a $25,000 Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope grant from the NASCAR race driver Jimmie Johnson Foundation.
Executive Director Rocky Welker says Siouxlanders voted online to help the agency win the grant over competitors from larger metropolitan areas.

Hull Fire Department Respond To Garage Fire
(Hull) — The Hull Fire Department responded to a report of a garage on fire at 1021 Division Street, in Hull, IA. That fire was reported early Thursday morning. Upon arrival fire personnel observed a three stall garage fully engulfed by fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in approximately one hour. No injuries were reported. The fire damaged the entire structure, vehicles, a boat and personal property contained inside.
The Hull Fire Department was assisted by the Hull Ambulance, Sioux Center Fire Department and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Hull Fire Chief.
Nationwide Search Turns Up Photo Of Missing Soldier
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Cross-country efforts to track down a photo of an Iowan killed in the Vietnam War have turned up an image of the man when he was 14 years old.
Chris Mudge, executive director of the Iowa Newspaper Association, says the photo of Staff Sgt. David L. McCombs was provided Thursday by an Illinois man.
The photo of McCombs, a U.S. Army soldier who was born in Oskaloosa and died at age 26 in Vietnam, was the last one needed to complete Iowa’s contribution to the Vietnam Memorial Fund’s “Wall of Faces.” The tribute aims to put a face to the more than 58,000 names listed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.
Mudge says efforts are ongoing to find a photo of McCombs closer to his death in 1969.
Missouri Valley Man Charged With Arson
MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa (AP) – Police have arrested an Iowa teen accused of setting the same vacant house on fire three separate times last year.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 19-year-old Coty Cates, of Missouri Valley, is charged with three counts of second-degree arson in connection with the October fires.
The house is a complete loss.
Authorities say they’re investigating other possible arson cases in the area, including another vacant house fire in March, which resulted in the arrest of former Missouri Valley Fire Chief Johnnie Walker. He pleaded not guilty to interference with official acts and reporting false information.
Investigators say there’s no known connection between Walker and Cates.
