State Legislature Starts Up General Session

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa lawmakers have convened for the 2016 legislative session, with a school funding fight expected in a year with limited new dollars.
Legislators in the Republican-majority House and Democratic-controlled Senate gaveled in Monday at the Capitol in Des Moines. A key issue will be how much additional funding to provide to schools.
Branstad will unveil his budget Tuesday during his Condition of the State address. The Republican governor said Monday that he will seek a 2.45 percent increase to basic state aid for schools for the 2016-2017 school year. That’s less than Senate Democrats want to spend and more than House Republicans have previously sought.
Branstad said the spending increase combined with money for a teacher leadership program would cost $145 million in the next fiscal year.

Influenza Cases On The Rise In Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Department of Public Health says flu activity is on the rise in Iowa.
Three flu viruses are active in the state, including two types of influenza A and an influenza B strain, all of which are covered by this year’s flu shots.
The state health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the shot is the best protection, especially since flu season normally peaks during January and February.
Health department medical director Patricia Quinlisk says it’s still not too late to receive the vaccination.
She says even those who have had the flu already could become ill with one of the other strains circulating. She says vaccination will protect against getting influenza a second or even third time this year.
