Street Next To North Ice Cream Plant To Be Closed
(Le Mars) — City officials have announced that a portion of 2nd Avenue southeast from 1st Street southeast to 2nd Street southeast on the east side of the North Ice Cream Plant will be closed today (Saturday) from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The street is closed so a crane can retrieve a roof unit for repairs.
Chamber Awards Banquet Scheduled For Tonight
(Le Mars) — Later this evening at the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce annual banquet and awards program, we will learn which Le Mars business has been selected as the “Business of the Year” and some citizen of Le Mars will be honored and recognized as the “Citizen of the Year”. In addition to those two honors, the chamber banquet will recognize the “Employees of the Month” and the “Bosses of the Quarter”. Other honors will be bestowed to the United Way Volunteer of the Year, and the Chamber will also recognize its Mainstreet/Chamber Volunteer of the Year. Social hour begins at 6:00 p.m. with the banquet to start at 7:00 p.m. The Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet and Awards program will be held in the upper level of the Le Mars Convention Center.
Gehlen To Celebrate “Catholic Schools Week”
(Le Mars) — Monday begins “Catholic Schools Week, and according to Alissa Schipper, Campus ministries director with Gehlen Catholic Schools, one of the highlights for the week will be having mass conducted by the Bishop.

Schipper says the joint liturgy will begin at 9:00 a.m. Schipper says the purpose behind “Catholic Schools Week” is to recognize and celebrate the value of a catholic school education.

The Gehlen official says activities have been planned all week long, acknowledging “Catholic Schools Week” including a family picnic when parents join their children for lunch, and student appreciation day when dads will dine with their children. Schipper says the weeks’ finale occurs Saturday evening when Spalding Catholic hosts their annual gala ball at the Hospers Community Center.
U.S.S. Sioux City To Be Launched This Weekend
(Sioux City) — A naval ship named for Iowa’s fourth largest city will be launched this weekend. Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott is among a group of city leaders in Marinette (mair-uh-net), Wisconsin for events surrounding the dedication of the U.S.S. Sioux City.

The littoral (lit-or-ul) combat ship is designed to detect mines. The commander of the ship, Kevin Ralston, and a dozen crew members visited Sioux City back in September.

The U.S.S Sioux City will eventually be based in Mayport, Florida. It will operate across the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and in the Middle East. The $700 million, 378 foot long ship will be manned by a crew of 53 sailors.
Carson, Beck, And Robertson All To Appear At Sioux Center On Political Campaigns
(Le Mars) — This weekend marks the last weekend before the Iowa caucuses and candidates and their supporters are crossing the state making their final stump speeches, with several appearing in northwest Iowa. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush appeared at Dordt College in Sioux Center last evening. Speaking about Dordt College, Dr. Ben Carson will appear at the Sioux Center college on this afternoon. Carson is scheduled to appear at the Campus Center beginning at 3:00 p.m. Across town in Sioux Center, conservative radio and television talk show host Glenn Beck will appear with television personality Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame. The dual are campaigning on behalf of Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Both have recently endorsed the republican presidential candidate. Beck and Robertson will appear at the Terrace View Events Center and are scheduled to speak at 4:30 p.m.
