Spencer, Iowa Man Catches Fish Worth Hundreds Of Dollars

A Spencer, Iowa man caught a fish in the middle of the night that was worth hundreds of dollars.

Ten “tagged” fish had been released into the Iowa Great Lakes for the annual “Walleye Weekend” fishing tournament back on May 7th and 8th.

The 34-thousand dollars in prize money went unclaimed because no one caught any of the tagged walleye during the tournament — but a fisherman caught one this past weekend.

Steve Quail of Spencer caught one of the prize fish Sunday night, around 11:30 p.m.

Jeff Thee of the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce says Quail gets a cut of the top prize:

Walleye are abundant in Iowa lakes and rivers, but can be difficult to catch.

The walleye fishing season in Iowa runs from the first Saturday in May through February 14th.
