Pick Up Truck Collides With Semi Truck On Highway 3
(Le Mars) — A tragic accident occurred last evening on Highway 3 on the east side
of town between a pick-up truck and a semi truck. The Plymouth County
Communications Center received numerous 9-1-1 calls regarding the accident at
about 8:54 p.m. Callers stated that two vehicles were involved and an ambulance
was needed. The Le Mars Ambulance and the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department
responded to the scene along with officers from the Le Mars Police Department and
deputies from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office. The Le Mars Ambulance
transported the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet Silerado pick-up truck to Floyd Valley
Heathcare, and later transferred the same individual to Mercy Medical Center in
Sioux City with life threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation at the
scene by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol indicate
the 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck was westbound on Highway 3 and a 1997 Freightliner
truck/tractor was eastbound on Highway 3. Both vehicles entered a curve in the
roadway and the pickup truck veered into the eastbound lane and was hit by the
semi truck. The driver of the semi was not injured. Only the two drivers were in
the vehicles. The investigation continues and the names of the drivers are not
being released at this time, pending the notification of relatives.

C-F Industries Starts Up Fertilizer Plant
SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (AP) – A 320-foot-tall structure that shoots flames into
the air has been put into service at an Iowa nitrogen fertilizer complex.
CF Industries announced Thursday that the flare stack has been placed into service during
commissioning of its new ammonia and urea plants at Port Neal. The stack is
designed to safely combust gases during certain times at the plant. Flames can
extend as far as 200 feet beyond the tip of the stack, when it’s ignited.
Officials say the stack will be used intermittently, but will burn
continuously for a couple of weeks as the new plants come online and production
begins.
The company is nearing completion of a $2 billion expansion.

Former Casey City Clerk Sentenced
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Federal prosecutors plan to ask the former city clerk
for the small western Iowa city of Casey to pay more than $2 million in
restitution as part of her sentence for mail fraud and malicious use of fire.
Dorothy Dillinger entered a plea agreement in May admitting she lit the City
Hall building on fire in August 2014, the night before state auditors were to
arrive to investigate missing money she’d taken and used for personal expenses
since 2009.
Dillinger, who is 61, served as the city clerk for 30 years.
Her sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 21.
Prosecutors in documents filed Friday seek five years in prison and $2.2
million to pay for rebuilding City Hall and replacing contents including tax
returns, tools, city maps and a Santa suit.
Des Moines Restaurant Wins “Best Pork Tenderloin”
(Des Moines) — The latest restaurant to claim the title of Iowa’s “Best Breaded
Pork Tenderloin” is in the state’s capital city. The award from the Iowa Pork
Producers Association (IPPA) was presented on Friday to Nick’s, located near the
Des Moines Airport. Owner Nick Iaria says the secret to his pork
tenderloin is keeping everything fresh.
The 43-year-old Iaria is a lifelong Des Moines resident and opened his restaurant
on the city’s south side four years ago.
Nick’s menu includes an Italian beef sandwich, a sausage sandwich, pizzas and hot
dogs. But, the best seller — by far — is the tenderloin.
Nick’s sells both a queen size (6-7 oz.) and a king size (12-13 oz.) tenderloin.
This is the 14th year for the “Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin” contest. The IPPA
presented Nick’s with a $500 check and a plaque. The 1901 Chop Haus in Traer had
the runner-up tenderloin in this year’s contest and received $250 and a plaque.
The other finalists were Sweet n’ Saucy in Fairfield, Stumpy’s Bar and Grill in
Duncombe, and Willie’s Sports Bar and Grill in Hampton. Each of those restaurants
receive a plaque. Iowa is the top pork producing state in the country. October is
National Pork Month.
