Legion Member Comments About The Importance Of Veterans Day
(Le Mars) — Veteran’s Day is a day when the nation honors our Veterans for keeping this country safe and free. Wayne Schipper of Le Mars is a past commander of the Wasmer Post #241 American Legion. Schipper served in the U-S Navy during the Viet Nam era. He says Veterans are grateful for being
remembered for their service and sacrifices.
Schipper reminds us that civilians are as important as the veteran.
The retired Navy sailor says the American flag, and what it symbolizes, is important to most veterans, and he says veterans are deeply troubled when the flag is misused or abused.
Schipper and several other members of the local American Legion post often give presentations to students at the Veterans Memorial Park located in Le Mars. He says several students don’t realize the true meaning of the flag’s colors, and what they represent.
Schipper says the students do have a greater sense of appreciation following the Legion’s presentations.
