Le Mars Police Arrest Minors At Drinking Party

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Police Department received a complaint of underage
drinking at a Le Mars residence on Saturday evening – early Sunday morning. As
a result of the investigation at 360 3rd Street Northwest, apartment number two,
six minors were taken into custody. Those arrested include: 18 year old Ethan
Biezuns of Remsen, 19 year old Spencer Richter of Le Mars, 19 year old Skylar
Kunkel of Le Mars, 18 yer old Keaton Bohenkamp of Remsen, and 18 year old Brooke Vander Ploeg of Hospers. The Le Mars Police also arrested a 16 year old female who was cited into juvenile court for the charge of a minor in possession of
alcohol.

Kounkel Arrested By Plymouth County Deputies

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County authorities arrested a Le Mars man on Saturday for
revocation of a bond. 31 year old Chase Kounkel was originally arrested for the
possession of controlled substance violations by possessing precursors used to
manufacture methamphetamines and possessing methamphetamines with a bond of $50,000. Kounkel also had an outstanding warrant for burglary in the first
degree, criminal mischief for the third degree, domestic abuse assault, and
violation of a no contact-protection order. Bond was set at $25,000 for those
charges. All total, Kounkel’s bond is set at $75,000.

 

Ebert To Appear In Court

(Le Mars) — The Cherokee woman that was originally accused of attempted murder and willful injury by causing an auto accident and purposely hitting an oncoming vehicle is set to appear in Plymouth County District court today. 30 year old Melissa Ebert is expected to take the Alford plea to lesser charges. Court
documents state that Ebert will plead to serious injury by motor vehicle and to
a second offense of OWI. The incident stems back to September 9th of 2015.
Court documents say Ebert threaten to kill herself and her passenger, Damian
Johnson before veering her car into the path of an on-coming car driven by
Dustin Boll of Le Mars. All three were seriously injured in the accident.
Ebert is scheduled to appear in court today at 1:30 p.m.

 

American Legion Participates In “Wreaths Across America” Ceremonies

(Le Mars) — Members of the Le Mars American Legion Wasmer Post #241 braved the frigid cold temperatures and strong winds to place seven evergreen wreaths at
the Le Mars Veterans Park. It was all part of the “Wreaths Across America”
ceremonies. The American Legion held an abbreviated ceremony due to the cold
elements. However, the seven wreaths are in honor of those veterans that
served, and those military personnel currently serving, and not able to get home
for the holidays. This is the fourth year Le Mars American Legion has
participated in the “Wreaths Across America” program. Throughout the nation,
veterans groups and volunteers are placing the wreaths at grave sites and
memorials and monuments. All the wreaths originated from Maine. The wreaths
located at the Le Mars Veterans Park will remain until December 31st, allowing
people the opportunity to view them through the holiday season.

Kass To Vote For President In Electoral College Today

(Remsen) — Although election day was more than a month ago, today will serve as the official election for the next president of the United States. That’s
because those people selected to be an elector from the Electoral College will
convene at their respective state capitals and officially cast their vote. Don
Kass of Remsen is one of six state electors. He was chosen from the Republican
District Convention in Fort Dodge. This marks the second time Kass has been chosen as part of the Electoral College. Kass says he will vote for Donald Trump.

 

Democrats To Fund Study To Determine What Went Wrong In Recent Elections

(Des Moines) — The Iowa Democratic Party’s leadership is authorizing a “deep dive” to figure out why Democrats had such a “devastating” 2016. Radio Iowa’s O. Kay Henderson reports.

 

 

Karen Pitts Honored As School District “Employee of the Month”

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Community School District honored a Middle School
Instructional aide as its December “Employee of the Month”. Karen Pitts has
worked with the Le Mars Community school district for the past 20 years. Middle
School principal Steve Shanks submitted the nomination of Pitts, saying she is
an incredibly generous person. Karen Pitts has helped many students, not just
those with academic help, but also with meals, clothing, and school supplies.
She has a soft heart for kids who are sad, lonely, or in trouble for one thing
or another. If you were to find the most needy students in our building,
chances are Karen Pitts has found them too, and is helping them in some private
way. She is a great employee…hardworking and always putting the needs of the
kids first. We are blessed to have Karen Pitts working at the Le Mars Community
Middle School. Our congratulations go to Karen Pitts of the Le Mars Middle
School for being honored as this month’s “employee of the month”.

2017 Garbage-Recyclable Schedules Now Available

(Le Mars) — The city of Le Mars has available the 2017 garbage and recycling
schedule magnets. They are available at the city hall offices, and will also be
available at the vestibule for residents to pick up after hours.

 

Ho-Chunk Inc. Investing $25 Million To Renovate Old Buildings

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – An abandoned industrial section of downtown Sioux City
is getting a $25 million makeover that developers hope will turn the
neighborhood into a bustling urban residential area.
The project is led by Ho-Chunk Inc., which is the Winnebago Tribe of
Nebraska’s economic development corporation. Over the past two years, Ho-Chunk
has bought and started refurbishing two abandoned buildings.
Ho-Chunk recently bought a third building to expand the project.
Dennis Johnson with Ho-Chunk says the project is taking dilapidated
buildings and turning them into something cool.
The first building to be completed will feature a restaurant on the
first floor and apartments on the upper two floors. The 20 apartments have a
modern style and come with stainless steel appliances.
