Sioux City Teen Shoots 3 Year Old Sister With BB Gun

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A Sioux City teen has been arrested and charged with a felony after police said he intentionally shot his 3-year-old sister twice in the face with a BB gun, severely injuring her.
The  17-year- old shot the preschooler Wednesday, breaking her jaw and requiring surgery.
The teen has been charged with willful injury. The Associated Press generally does not name juveniles charged with crimes.
Doctors say one BB was removed during surgery, but the other BB entered near her eye and lodged next to her brain. Doctors say it was too risky to remove, so has been left in place.
The teen is being held in Woodbury County Jail.

Urbandale Man Admits To Killing Two Police Officers Is Sentenced To Life In Prison

(Urbandale) — The man accused of killing two Des Moines-area police officers last year has admitted to the shootings.

Scott Michael Greene, at a court hearing Friday morning , withdrew a not guilty plea submitted back in December. The 46-year-old Greene, who is from Urbandale,
then pleaded guilty to the November 2, 2016 ambush-style shooting deaths of Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin and Des Moines Police Sergeant Tony Beminio.

A trial had been scheduled for this September in Dubuque County. Greene was sentenced today to life in prison.

Prosecutors say Greene who pleaded guilty to killing two police officers in Iowa simply disliked law enforcement.
Polk County Attorney John Sarcone said during a hearing Friday that Scott Michael Greene drew a “to do” list in his jail cell that amounted to a hit list. The list included the names of three sheriff’s deputies, as well as the names of the two slain officers, with checkmarks by their names.
Greene pleaded guilty Friday morning to the shooting deaths of Urbandale officer Justin Martin and Des Moines Sgt. Anthony Beminio. He was immediately sentenced to life sentences for two counts of first-degree murder.
Sarcone says evidence shows Greene bought a bottle of whiskey at a convenience store before he took a loaded assault rifle and shot the first officer he encountered on a street early on Nov. 2, 2016. The officers were killed as they sat in their patrol cars, about 2 miles apart.

Judge Signs Off On Charges Against Correa-Camenaty

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A judge has signed off on the charges against a man accused of killing a sheriff’s deputy and wounding another while escaping from an Iowa jail.
The Pottawattamie County District judge on Friday also scheduled 24-year- old Wesley Correa-Carmenaty’s arraignment hearing for June 19.
Authorities say Correa-Carmenaty had just been sentenced on May 1 to 45 years in prison in an unrelated murder case when he managed to grab one of the deputies’ guns while being transferred to a Council Bluffs jail. He shot them both and used the jail van to escape.
He was recaptured after authorities say he carjacked a woman at gunpoint and forced her to drive to Omaha, Nebraska.
Correa-Carmenaty is charged with murder, attempted murder, escape, kidnapping and other counts.

University Of Iowa Settles Athletic Lawsuit

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa will pay $6.5 million to settle discrimination lawsuits filed by former athletic administrator Jane Meyer and her partner, former women’s field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum.
The school agreed in settlements released Friday to pay Meyer $2.33 million, Griesbaum $1.49 million and $2.68 million to the Des Moines law firm that represented them.
Jurors this month found that school officials discriminated against Meyer based on her gender and sexual orientation, retaliated against her for speaking out and paid her less than a male counterpart. They awarded $1.45 million in damages in what advocates for women in college athletics called a landmark
verdict.
The settlement avoids a June trial in a lawsuit brought by Griesbaum, whose 2014 firing by athletic director Gary Barta was center to both cases.

Arkansas Senator Visits Iowa

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton says he’s not in Iowa laying the groundwork to run for president, but is touching on familiar themes of those who have.
Sure, he told about 100 Iowa Republicans at a fundraiser Friday night in Council Bluffs he “loves Iowa so much I married a woman born here,” referring to his wife Anna, who was born in Sioux City.
But, besides the typical Iowa pandering, Cotton laid out a broader vision. He called for the national unity that followed the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Cotton, who was elected in 2014, noted Republican President Donald Trump’s victory, but grouped it generally with GOP wins in November that he attributed to general dissatisfaction with Congress and the federal government.
Yet despite those wins, Cotton called on his audience to aspire to
better days.

Iowa’s Best Burger – Smokin’ Hereford BBQ

(Storm Lake) — May is Beef month, and we begin thinking about firing up the grill to make juicy mouth-watering hamburgers. But who in the state has the best burger? According to the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen Association, the best burger can be found at a restaurant in Storm Lake. The Smokin’ Hereford BBQ was recently named as having “The Best Burger in Iowa.” Restaurant owner Jennifer Husted says they opened the restaurant in October of 2015. She says the secret to having the best burger is using locally raised corn-fed beef. Husted says it was their partners that suggested they try for the “Best Burger” contest.

Husted talks about how the owners formed a partnership with the Sac County cattle producer to deliver local beef.

When so many other restaurants feature certified Angus beef, why did they choose Hereford beef? Husted says they wanted to try something a little different. She says their customers believe the Hereford beef is juicy and full of flavor.

Husted explains the judging procedure for the state’s “Best Burger.”

Husted says since the restaurant has been honored for serving “Iowa’s Best Burger” they have seen a significant increase in customers, all wanting to try the award-winning hamburger.

Husted describes the Smokin’ Hereford BBQ as a rustic-looking restaurant. There are peanut shells on the wooden floor, and the decor features an old barn door with several old signs associated with farming.

Husted says she, her husband, and the other owners, Nate and Nancy Jensen, were always proud of their hamburgers, but never dreamed that they would ever be awarded the title of “Best Burger.” She says it is nice to see customers now agree with them.

If you want to try “Iowa’s Best Burger”, the Smokin’ Hereford BBQ is located on Highway 7 on the west side of town of Storm Lake or 1605 West Milwaukee Avenue.
