Sheriff’s Office Investigating Roll-over Auto Accident

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an auto accident that happened over the weekend on county road K-22 near 280th Street.
Apparently, 57 year old Anna Salem of Sioux City was heading northbound when it appeared as if her vehicle had driven off the roadway onto the east shoulder of the road. Salem
attempted to re-enter the roadway, but lost control sending the vehicle into a slide to the west side of county road K-22. The car entered onto the west shoulder sideways and then rolled. The car came to rest in a cornfield. The Hinton Fire Department assisted with removing the two victims from the over-turned car.
Salem informed authorities that she believed she was traveling 55 mph. Salem, and her passenger 90 year old Lieselotte Johnson of Sioux City were both transported to Unity Point-St. Lukes hospital by the Hinton Ambulance.

Sioux City Man Sentenced To 7 Years In Prison For Shooting Little Sister With A BB-gun

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A Sioux City teen has been sentenced to seven years in prison for shooting his 3-year-old sister in the face with a BB gun.
18-year-old Adrian White was sentenced
after pleading guilty Monday in Woodbury County District Court to assault and child endangerment.
Prosecutors say White was 17 in May when he shot the preschooler twice in the face. One BB fractured the girl’s jaw and the other entered her eye and lodged next to her brain. Surgery was required to remove one of the BBs, but the other lodged near her brain. Doctors determined it was too risky to remove it.
White had sought to be tried as a juvenile, but that request was denied and he was prosecuted as an adult.

Grassley Supports Grandson To Be Next Iowa Agriculture Secretary

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley is firmly behind his grandson as a candidate to replace Bill Northey as Iowa’s secretary of agriculture.
Northey has been nominated to an undersecretary post at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is widely expected to be confirmed. State Rep. Pat Grassley, a Republican from New Hartford, has acknowledged his interest in succeeding
Northey.
Chuck Grassley said Wednesday that his grandson’s experience as a farmer and state legislator make him qualified to lead
the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
And, Chuck Grassley says, “I hope he’ll be appointed.”
Gov. Kim Reynolds, who is on a foreign trade mission, has said little about her plans for the appointment other than mentioning last week that several people were under consideration.

Black Bear Sighted In Southeast Iowa

MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) – Iowa officials say a black bear has been spotted just southeast of Montezuma in central Iowa.
The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office tells the Press-Citizen that deputies and an Iowa Department of Natural Resources officer confirmed the bear’s presence on Tuesday.
DNR Conservation Officer John Steinbach says the bear ran in front of a sheriff’s cruiser and into a cornfield as he and the deputies were out looking in the area.
Officials say the bear has shown no signs of aggression and is not considered a threat, although those who spot the animal should keep their distance.
Steinbach believes the bear is young and simply looking for a place to live.
