NEBRASKA LAWMAKERS STILL CAN’T PASS A BUDGET BILL

A dispute over abortion and family-planning services has stalled a Nebraska state budget bill for the second time, prompting a rebuke from the Speaker of the Legislature.

Lawmakers voted 31-7 on Friday to force an end to debate on the measure, two short of what was required.

The vote leaves the budget in limbo with time running out in this year’s session.

At issue is a provision that would prevent health clinics from getting federal family-planning money if they perform abortions or provide referrals to groups that do.

Speaker of the Legislature Jim Scheer says he was disappointed with the vote because a few senators broke their promises to vote in favor of ending the debate.

Scheer says senators need to “grow up” and find a compromise.

DAVENPORT MAN SENTENCED FOR 2017 SHOOTING DEATH

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – A Davenport man has been sentenced to up to 55 years in prison for the 2017 shooting death of another man in the front yard of a home.

The Quad-City Times reports that 28-year-old David Levy Jr. was sentenced Friday. A jury had found Levy guilty in February of second-degree murder and a firearm count for the death of 33-year-old Lasabian Walker.

Levy asked the judge at the sentencing hearing to let him plead guilty under a plea deal Levy had rejected before his trial. Levy said he didn’t understand the deal at the time and felt he was being rushed.

The judge rejected his request.

Police say Levy shot Walker several times after they had argued.
