Supply Chain Issues Could Affect Thanksgiving Turkey Availability

(Ames, IA)  —  The head of the Iowa Turkey Federation says reports of a Thanksgiving turkey shortage are not accurate.  Executive director Gretta Irwin says there is an “ample supply” of turkeys, but there are other issues which could leave your feathers ruffled if you’re hoping to have a roast turkey as your centerpiece on November 25th.  She says there are challenges in finding enough employees right now through the entire food chain and the turkey industry is definitely a part of that discussion.  Irwin says Iowa turkey producers will be raising around 12-million birds this year, but due to continued troubles with transportation and supply management, your nearest supermarket may soon be running lower than usual.  She recommends talking to a grocer now if you want a fresh turkey.

Iowa Scheduled to Receive CO VID Vaccine Shipment For Kids This Week

(Des Moines, IA)  —  Governor Kim Reynolds confirms Iowa is scheduled to receive its first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines for children ages five to 11 this week.  The governor says the doses will dispersed to pediatricians and pharmacies in the state.  The F-D-A and C-D-C are expected to approve the vaccine for younger children in the next couple weeks.  Reynolds opposes vaccine mandates and says Iowa parents should make the decision to vaccinate their children.  The Republican governor says the vaccine is the best defense in addressing COVID and the delta variant.  Thirty-nine percent of Iowa kids between the ages of 12 and 15 are fully vaccinated and 45 percent of 16 and 17-year olds have receive both doses.
