Unity Christian Sweeps Le Mars in Bulldog Home Opener

Le Mars opened their home basketball schedule by getting swept by their non-conference opponent from Unity Christian.

The Bulldog ladies fell in the opener of the night to the number-one team in Class 3A and defending state champions from Unity Christian by the final of 58-41.

Unity Christian got out to the early lead by the end of the first quarter. The Knights led the Bulldogs 15-4 through the first eight minutes. After that, the Bulldogs developed a plan and were able to keep the game competitive throughout the next two quarters. Unity Christian outscored the Bulldogs only by a 25-23 score over the next two quarters. Head Coach Cody Dyrhkopp outlines the gameplan his team was utilizing to stay in stride with Unity Christian last night.

The Bulldogs received a great scoring outburst from Sarah Brown who put 24 points on 8-17 from the field and 5-10 from the three-point line. Coach Dyhrkopp says that her shooting sparked the rest of her teammates into having success offensively.

Le Mars falls to 0-2 with the loss and will open up MRAC play on the road on Friday night taking on Sergenat Bluff-Luton. Unity Christian is 2-1 following the win and is home against Spirit Lake on Friday night.

The Le Mars boys basketball team opened their season with a disappointing loss at the hands of Unity Christian by the final of 57-52.

The Bulldogs were able to stay within reach of Unity Christian most of the night not allowing the Knights to lead by more than 10 points. However, the Bulldogs never really found their rhythm offensively or defensively to put enough consistency together to make a run at the lead. Head Coach Dave Irwin says that his team may have needed an attitude adjustment and an effort check before the game last night.

Le Mars sent Unity Christian to the free throw line 32 times in the loss last night with the Knights hitting 18 of them. Coach Irwin says that his team’s defense left a lot to be desired in their effort to slow down Unity’s offense.

The Bulldogs start the season 0-1 and will be at Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Friday night to open MRAC play. The Knights open 1-0 and will be home against Spirit Lake on Friday.
