Whitehead Reaches 500 Career Kills as Gehlen Catholic Sweeps Akron-Westfield

Gehlen Catholic volleyball rolled toward their third War Eagle Conference victory on Tuesday night with a straight-set win over Akron-Westfield.

The Jays went up 10-4 early in the first set and did not look back from there. Everything was clicking for the Jays towards the win, and Head Coach Dan Goebel says he knows the Jays could put together a complete game, and it was nice to see them do that.

Part of the reason for the Jays success throughout the night was their incredible offensive production. Starting with their passes, setter Cadence Goebel recorded 36 assists unofficially in the win. Coach Goebel says the passes were exactly where they needed to be throughout the night.

Miyah Whitehead was the top attacker offensively recording 19 kills unofficially. The first two kills on the night got her to 500 career kills making her the fifth Jay in program history to reach that mark. Coach Goebel says her energy makes her a great hitter.

Whitehead wasn’t the only hitter producing in large chunks for Gehlen Catholic. Aurora Goebel recorded nine kills, Jayden Barthole had seven, and Lynsey Reuter had four. Coach Goebel says having all of those hitters working makes their offense dangerous.

The Jays now host the annual CYO Tournament on Sunday. Coach Goebel says it will be good to see some great volleyball talent come to town and test the Jays.

The CYO Tournament begins at 11:00 AM on Sunday morning at Gehlen Catholic.
