The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team picked up their second win in a row with a 48-36 victory at West Sioux on Tuesday night.
The win followed a slow and sloppy start that saw the Jays score nothing for the first six minutes of the night. Head coach Ryan Wiltgen called two timeouts in the first three minutes, and he said he needed to re-orient the guys.
The problems all stemmed from the defensive side, but they bled to the offensive end where the Jays turned the ball over 11 times in the first half. Coach Wiltgen says that means the guys need to be especially disciplined on defense.
Nolan Teel led the Jays in scoring with 13 points and had four of the Jays’ six points in the first quarter. Coach Wiltgen says he has had to adapt to getting the toughest challenge on defense and still needing to have an impact on offense.
The Jays outscored West Sioux 13-5 in the second quarter and 19-11 in the fourth quarter to come out on top. One more regular season game against South O’Brien on Friday, and then it is tournament time for the Jays. Coach Wiltgen knows that if Gehlen comes out flat against any of their next opponents, they will not last long in the postseason.
Gehlen’s final War Eagle Conference record sits at 6-4, and they are now 9-11 overall.
