SUPERVISORS MEET TODAY
The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors meet in a Wednesday session, in order to canvass election results. Today’s session begins at 1 p.m. Action items today include the vote canvass, approval of the county’s insurance renewal through ICAP, and approval of family farm tax credit applications. The county engineer will bring several matters before the Supervisors. Later, the board will go into closed session to discuss a litigation matter.
UNEVEN CROP YIELDS THIS SEASON
The area crop specialist says a crazy growing season brought uneven yields across northwest Iowa fields.
Leah Ten Napel says part of the growing season had too much moisture, then not enough.
Plants that didn’t have to work hard to find moisture early in the season found it hard to find it in the crucial growth periods.
Ten Napel will find out more about moisture impacts on yields this week
All in all, yields should stay at a high standard, despite the inconsistent weather.
REPUBLICAN LEADERS RE-ELECTED AFTER SUCCESSFUL ELECTION
Republican lawmakers are coming off a successful election on the state level and will keep the same top leadership for the next session in January. Representative Pat Grassley of New Hartford was re-elected Speaker of the House Tuesday, and Matt Windschitl of Missouri Valley remains House Majority Leader. Both first gained those positions in 2019. Republicans re-elected Jack Whitver as Senate majority leader, a position he has held since 2018. Whitver has been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. But information released from the Senate says recent scans have shown that the tumor is shrinking and many of his symptoms have improved. Senate Republicans also reelected Amy Sinclair as Senate President.
FLOYD VALLEY FOUNDATION WINE AND CRAFT BEER TASTING A SUCCESS
An event to benefit Floyd Valley Healthcare facilities raised nearly 100-thousand dollars last weekend. The annual Floyd Valley Foundation Cruise in for a Cause was a wine and craft beer tasting & auction. It was held Saturday, November 9th in The Garage at 800. 250 people attended. They enjoyed select wines, craft beers and music throughout the evening. They was participated in a cork pull, silent and live auctions. With sponsorships, event proceeds, and post-event contributions, some 97-thousand dollars was raised. The funds will assist in renovation of the Floyd Valley Infusion Services space.
NW IOWA VOTER FRAUD CASE
A non-U.S. citizen, living here legally, will be prosecuted by the Iowa Attorney for alleged voter fraud. 35 year old Omar Ahumada Geronimo of Graettinger has been arrested and charged with two counts of election misconduct from Palo Alto County. Geronimo allegedly voted in a Graettinger city council and school board election in November 2, 2021.
SOUTH DAKOTA’S GOVERNOR NAMED TO TRUMP ADMINISTRATION
The Trump Administration has officially appointed Kristi Noem to be the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. President Trump says Noem has been very strong on border security. She was the first governor to send National Guard soldiers to help Texas fight the Biden border crisis, and they were sent a total of eight times. Noem will work closely with border czar Tom Homan to secure the border, and will guarantee that our American Homeland is secure. Noem said in a statement that she is honored and humbled that Trump selected her, and she looks forward to working with Homan to make America safe again. Noem was elected as South Dakota’s first female governor in 2018, and was re-elected in 2022 with the largest vote total in the history of South Dakota. Lt. Governor Larry Rhoden will finish the final two years of Noem’s current term as South Dakota’s governor through 2026.
