Gehlen Catholic girls basketball struggled last year finishing the season with a 2-20 record. That did not sit well with Gehlen for the last nine months, and they are eager to get back out there and right the ship. Head coach Brandon Schaecher says he senses a little extra motivation in this year’s team.
Rysaiah Sitzmann returns as the leader of the Jays in just about every statistical category. She will be looked to again for leadership, and the ability to put the team on her back at times. Coach Schaecher says she continues to raise her skill level early in the year.
The Jays also bring in a group of freshmen that have been able to hold their own early. This group has been competitive for a while from their early seasons to junior high. Coach Schaecher says they are an athletic group that will bring a lot to the table.
Gehlen Catholic does not mess around early in the season with four of their seven opponents in the preseason rankings. Coach Schaecher says he is hoping the girls do not shy away from the moment and play like they know they can.
The Jays tip off their season tonight at home against Kingsley-Pierson. You can listen to the game on KLEM with coverage beginning at 7:15 PM.
