The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team achieved some revenge from a loss earlier in the year with a 46-39 win at home over Gehlen Catholic on Tuesday night.
After the first quarter of play, it was looking like this game would resemble the 29-27 Gehlen win earlier in the year. The two combined to score just eight points in the first quarter and go 3-27 from the field. Akron-Westfield head coach Kent Johnson says he just wanted to see his girls continue to take the shots they were taking because he knew they would go in eventually.
While the Westerners were able to get into their groove eventually, it took longer for Gehlen Catholic. Gehlen Catholic head coach Brandon Schaecher says that took a toll on the girls as the game wore on.
The Westerners eventually put the game away with a 12-0 run through the middle part of the third quarter. Coach Johnson says that was due in large part to getting some quality shots to drop against Gehlen’s tough defense.
Gehlen Catholic drops to 8-10 on the season and is now 2-5 in the War Eagle Conference. The Jays get two more games this week at home starting on Thursday night with Alta-Aurelia. Coach Schaecher wants the girls to move past this game and get back on the right track to play better this week.
Akron-Westfield’s week wraps up already with a record of 10-8 overall and 6-2 in the War Eagle Conference. The Westerners have been a MASH unit as of late and did not get any help in that department against the Jays. Coach Johnson says he is looking for the girls to take things easy before a tough game next week against Hinton.
The Westerners play Hinton on Tuesday night next week in Akron.
