The Le Mars Community girls basketball team advanced past Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the Class 4A regional tournament by the final score of 57-48 on Wednesday night.
The win marked the first postseason win for second-year head coach Sidney Baumgartner as the leader of the Bulldogs. The first half of play was pretty close with neither side able to get much of an edge. Coach Baumgartner liked how her team played in that first half and liked how they responded to start the second half.
Le Mars’ third quarter saw them outscore Sergeant Bluff-Luton 20-5. The Bulldog offense got a big spark from Aubree Leusink who scored 10 of her 15 points in the third quarter. Coach Baumgartner says the offense was also sparked by strong play on the defensive side.
The Bulldogs got scoring all the way around the lineup with Ava Spencer and Leusink pouring in 15 points and Mya Skov adding 14 points off the bench. Coach Baumgartner says the girls were focused and prepared well for the game.
The Bulldogs now get the honor of facing off with the top-ranked team in Class 4A with a matchup against Bishop Heelan on Saturday in Sioux City. The Bulldogs are heavy underdogs and are going to go in there with that mindset. Coach Baumgartner says she wants them to play like they have nothing to lose.
Tip-off for that regional semifinal at Bishop Heelan is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Saturday, February 22. You can listen to the game on KLEM Radio.
