The Gehlen Catholic football team picked up a crucial district victory on Friday night defeating South O’Brien 42-7.
Running the football was a big factor in Gehlen’s success on the night. The Jays totaled 471 yards on the ground in a dominant performance in that aspect. Head coach Jeremy Schindler says his offensive line paved the way and dominated the trenches.
Of those 471 yards for Gehlen, 319 were recorded by Wyatt Konz alone. He scored the first four touchdowns on the night as well to give Gehlen the lead for good. Coach Schindler says he was very impressed by the way Konz ran the football.
The Wolverines scored their touchdown on the second play of the game. After that, it was an uphill climb for them to do anything with the football. Gehlen also forced two interceptions which helped out their cause. Coach Schindler says the guys on the line were generating pressure which made things challenging for South O’Brien.
With the win, the Jays are 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the district. The victory does not guarantee a playoff spot as things are still very undecided. While some things are up in the air, one thing is certain this week. A win over fourth-ranked West Sioux gives the Jays a playoff berth. Coach Schindler says that is the focus for his guys going into the last week of the regular season.
Kickoff between the Jays and Falcons is at 7:00 PM on Friday night at Jim Lorenzen Field.
